" Eyebright, Euphrasia officinalis, treats sties and fatigued, bloodshot inflamed and itchy eyes. Yet, despite its reputation as an effective eye medicine, there are no scientific studies that either confirm its benefit or explain exactly how the herb works. However, eyebright is still used to ease the pain of eye injuries and to promote healing. Drinking a tea from eyebright may help to relieve hay-fever symptoms and to reduce headache pain that is due to congestion of mucous membranes. When used as a compress, eyebright soothes tired eyes, and its tannins may help reduce the inflammation associated with allergy-related " pinkeye " or conjunctivitis. Note: As it's easy to introduce bacteria into the eye, always use caution when applying eyebright near your eyes. Therapeutic Effect:Tannins in eyebright make the herb anti-inflammatory and astringent, both useful qualities in a compress for red, inflamed or fatigued eyes. Taken as a tea, eyebright may help ease hay-fever symptoms and headaches due to mucus congestion. How eyebright works has not been determined, no scientific evidence substantiates its healing powers. Help for eyestrain:Headaches and itchy eyes are both symptoms of eyestrain. Air pollutions, air-conditioning and spending long hours in front of a computer screen all contribute to overtaxed eyes. An eye bath made with eyebright tea can offer quick relief from symptoms. Proper hygiene helps:Because the eyes aren't protected from infectious bacteria in any way, careful procedures mut be followed when using eyebright as a eyewash. Be sure to thoroughly wash your hands before touching your eye and administering an eyewash, and always use sterile glass containers for storage. Take Care:Use eyebright only for allergic conjunctivitis, not conjunctivitis that is contagious. A physician should diagnose which condition you have before you try any eyebright treatments. Healing Tea Mixtures:For children:1 ¾ oz. eyebright1 ¾ oz Echinacea rootPrepare a tea with these plants to help fortify children who are frequently sick. Encourage the child to drink 2-3 cups a day over the course of several days. Use for 1 week, stop for 1 week; repeat once more. For inflammation of the eyes and mouth:1 ¾ oz eyebright1 oz. plantain leaves¾ oz. calendula flowersMake this tea for use as a rinse for inflammation of the eyes and as a gargle for mucous membranes of the mouth. Because plantain is an expectorant, drinking this tea blend helps coughs with expectoration. To clean the eyes:1 ¾ oz. eyebright1 ¾ oz. fennel seedsMake a tea of eyebright and fennel to help clean the eyes by removing mucus and debris. Drink 3 cups of tea a day and apply a compress 2 times a day. A regimen using this tea blend over a period of several weeks may help prevent cataracts from worsening. ~source Complete Guide to Natural Healing~-- Diana Gonzalez Nothing wastes more energy than worrying - the longer a problem is carried, the heavier it gets.
