Guest guest
Hello all, Thank you for allowing me to join this list and thank you for the 'Freeby' recipes :-)). I loved the idea of a cake mix but as I am an Australian I have a few questions: 1) All-purpose flour. Is this plain or self raising flour? I assume it's plain as there is baking powder in the recipe but I'm not familiar with the term 'all-purpose'. 2) Crisco. What is this please? 3) 3 tablespoons baking powder. Australian tablespoons hold 4 teaspoons so am I correct in thinking that this means 9 teaspoons? Looking forward to meeting you all and contributing wherever I can. I am a herbalist and use herbs in every way, every day so I'm sure that this is what you can expect from me :-) Go well, NerysNEW! Guest guest
Welcome, you will love this group, I know I do! My name is Leesy and I am mainly a lurker, but I have contributed a time or two, I am happy to assist you! I will answer in caps, I am not shouting, I just think it may be easier to see my answers since I can change the color or font, ok? > 1) All-purpose flour. Is this plain or self raising flour? I assume it's plain as there is baking powder in the recipe but I'm not familiar with the term 'all-purpose'. YOU ARE RIGHT IT IS PLAIN FLOUR, BASICALLY BLEACHED FLOUR. OUR SEFL RISING FLOUR DOESN'T HAVE ANY NAME AS FAR AS I KNOW. SO YOU ARE RIGHT ON TARGET! :-) > 2) Crisco. What is this please? CRISCO IS A SHORTENING BRAND IN USA, ANY SHORTENING WILL WORK > 3) 3 tablespoons baking powder. Australian tablespoons hold 4 teaspoons so am I correct in thinking that this means 9 teaspoons? WOW, 3 TABLESPOONS IS ALOT, HMMMM, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT RECIPE! BUT YES YOU GET 3 TEASPOONS IN 1 TABLESPOON, SO 3 TABLESPOONS WOULD BE 9 TEASPOONS :-) > Looking forward to meeting you all and contributing wherever I can. Guest guest
Hello Leesy and Elizabeth, Thank you both for your replies to my questions. The reason why the amount of baking powder looks so huge is that the recipe is for bulk cake pre-mix. It was sent to me by the moderator when I joined and looks really good. This business of an Aussie tablespoon holding 4 teaspoons and a USA tablespoon holding 3 teaspoons has caused many people who aren't aware of the difference to ruin a carefully made dish! We also work in grams rather than ounces which causes further confusion!! Regarding your query about my herbal heritage Leesy. I was raised mainly by a Welsh grandmother who was the herbalist and healer for the people and animals who lived in several valleys around her home. She would take me out gathering wild herbs from the time I could walk and then we would go to her cellar to turn the gathered riches into ointments and medicines. Go well, NerysNEW! Guest guest
Hi again, I've just been to the website and see that my thank you note below doesn't appear to have come through so I'm resending it.
