JoAnn

Do you have any information on Splenda? I have heard it is safer than

anything else. I do not like Stevia.

Thanks

Thanks Allen

Allen,

There is a world of difference in various Stevia products. Stevia

has a taste that is unique. It has been described as very sweet with

a slight licorice, taste.

Stevia is available in several forms, the less refined being the

most healthful. It can be purchased in dried leaf form, Stevia leaf

powder, tea, or as a liquid tincture, extract, or concentrate.

The liquid forms made from the

whole leaf are very dark in color, dark brown to almost black, and

come in different purities and strengths depending on the type and

manufacturer.

I find that the liquid form is best for iced tea and other home-

made beverages.

The powdered varieties sometimes leave a bitter aftertaste while the

liquid extracts are much more palatable.

It is good to read the labels in order to find out just what we're

getting; additives are sometimes used in these products, and some

are made with alcohol, and some are diluted with water.

Due to Stevia's extraordinary sweetness, many manufacturers are now

offering " Stevia blends, " which are Stevia (usually in the form of

stevioside) blended with malto-dextrin or other fillers.

These are generally about four times sweeter than sugar and

although claims are made that these are easier to bake with the

fillers detract from the purity of the product. Again, read labels

so you know what you are getting.

I insist on obtaining the genuine Stevia in its pure natural form!

The sweetness and taste of all forms of Stevia can vary greatly due

to a variety of factors including where and how it was grown,

processing methods, and if it is diluted or " blended. "

It has been said that the best tasting and most health promoting

Stevia comes from Paraguay.

NOW brand single packets are pretty reasonable for smoothies, pies

and baking, however the liquids are much more tasty for your hot and

cold beverages.

Try using a flavorful tea such as long-life " Chai " tea with liquid

stevia. Ummm...yummy! <LOL Chai tea frequently has cardamom

included...another excellent natural sweetener!

I tried them all initially and settled on several specific brands.

If you perservere, you will find the right one. There are a host of

natural sweeteners out there. For information regarding several

other possibilities, visit our Natural Sugar forum on the

Alternative Medicine forum. There is a wealth of information on the

web as well.

Good Luck,JoAnn

Stevia Facts:

The stevia herb normalizes blood sugar levels and therefore promotes

a consistent energy flow, unlike sugar, which causes a rapid peak in

blood sugar followed by a crash then a craving for more sugar.

Stevia has been used successfully by diabetics and those suffering

from hypoglycemia and it has been prescribed by physicians in

Paraguay in the treatment of both conditions and for high blood

pressure as well.

Stevia is a helpful aid in weight loss due to the fact that it

contains no sugar, no calories and has been shown to reduce craving

for sweets and fatty foods.

Because it contains no sugar and will not feed yeast, those who are

dealing with candida can use it freely.

Alobar,

There is plenty of evidence out now that ascorbic acid powders

are derived from high fructose corn syrup (genetically engineered

also). Fructose has double the glycemic level of agave, links

following....

Sweeteners

maltose 105

glucose 100

honey 90

sucrose (table sugar) 75

fructose 20

agave nectar (1 tbsp) 11

The fact that

Marianne,

According to this, splenda is chlorinated and Chlorine is derived

from (by product of) *Dioxin*!? Yikes! I believe I'll stick with the

stevia liquid! We absorb tons of dioxins from environmental

pollution and foods as it is without knowingly ingesting them in an

artificial substance!

Noticing that some 'reputable' natural(?) companies include this in

their products as well?

Hansens is unquestionably natural? Hmm...

Their products are in our

natural foods section.

Thanks!!

JoAnn
