Guest guest
I find that brand is not important if one buys powdered vitamin C. In tablet form, the different brands of tablets may dissolve differently, and that can be a problem if they do not dissolve quickly enough. I started out with plain vitamin C (ascorbic acid). I used about 4 grams (1 level tsp) in a pint of water. Over time I found I was getting an itchy scratchy throat from the acid. I always rinsed my mouth with pain water after I drank some C, but the acid was still a bit rough on my throat (and probably my teeth). I tried buffered C, but that has a strange taste I did not like. So now I use part buffered C and part plain C. I mix up the powders & experiment with different ratios. I want to taste some sourness but not too much. With the buffered C it is possible to get sloppy in measuring the one level teaspoon doses because it is quite easy to put too much in a pint of water & then take more than one was anticipating. I sip my vitamin C all throughout my waking day. And I have more by my bed. When I wake up in the middle of my sleep cycle for a bathroom run, I drink more C before going back to bed. Then I drink a much larger dose of C (8-12 grams) in my morning smoothie to compensate for C depletion while I slept. If I were you, rather than aim at how many mg/pound of body weight to use per day, I'd just see what your body actually needs. Taking C to bowel tolerance is a real simple yardstick to measure by. I keep notes so I know what my daily C dose is doing at different times. I use 25-30 grams when healthy. When a flu is coming on, I take 30-40 grams. Buying powdered vitamin C is so much less expensive than buying tablets. And if you are going to be taking large amounts of C, the cost savings can be significant. Guest guest
I was also wondering since ascorbic acid can mess with your throat how will it do for someone who has acid reflux? And where would you get the powder C. I see some stuff in the canning section is this the same stuff?? * * * * * * * Theresa in Fl No one can choose your mountain,or tell you when to climb.... I'd buy both the buffered C and the plain. Then see what your body wants. Acid reflux may indicate your body would be happier with the buffered C, or a mix containing mainly buffered with a small amount of the plain. The C in the canning section is the right stuff if it does not contain sugar or other added ingredients, but it is much cheaper in larger quantity. I buy it in 3 pound jars at my local General Nutrition Center. Whole Foods also carries it, as do many other health food stores. There are also many places to buy on the internet. Guest guest
Theresa You can also buy Sodium Ascorbic or Calcium Ascorbic which are not acidic. Guest guest
The way you find what YOUR saturation dose of vitamin C is by taking 1000 mg every hour until you develop diarrhea. Your saturation dose would be 1000 mg less than that amount. As your body heals up, your saturation dose will change (usually decrease). While vitamin C is basically ascorbic acid, you can get vitamin C supplements made from many different sources. If you get an allergic reaction from one type, try switching to another type. I find powder vitamin C more effective than pills or capsules. Make sure you rinse your mouth out as this stuff can dissolve your teeth. BTW, have you tried myofascial release for Fibromyalgia? -- Donald E. Guest guest
Allow me to add a few things here. The goal is to hit the point of the beginnings of diarrhea. One is looking for loose stool with some urgency to void, not a full-blown emergency. I consider myself relatively healthy & my daily dose of C is over 30 grams. The gram an hour is a good place to start, but if no loose stool by bedtime, start taking 2 grams an hour the next day. Some people who have serious illness can take as much as 100 grams a day or even more before hitting the point where their bodies do not need any more. Alobar - " Donald E.
