If you've been with me for any length of time at all, you already know how I feel about conventional medicine's twisted take on skin cancers - and sunscreen. Why, in just the last 4 or 5 months worth of Daily Doses, I've told you about how: A DEFICIENCY - not an excess - of full-spectrum sunlight is what's clearly linked to melanoma (Daily Dose, 7/8)... Sunscreen may actually be CAUSING skin cancer, if the latest statistics and case studies are any indication (Daily Dose, 7/15)... The media intentionally misrepresents skin cancer's prevalence by lumping together the relatively rare malignant melanoma (NOT sun-caused) and the common, easily cured basal-cell cancer - which also isn't PROVEN to be caused by sunlight exposure (Daily Dose, 7/11)... But the latest twist in the sunlight/cancer saga hits close to home for all those " sky-is-falling " helio-phobes (sun haters) in the mainstream: It turns out that artificial tanning - the same UV technology the sun-averse bake under to AVOID the " dangers " of natural sunlight - has now been proven to dramatically increase the risk of the most deadly and difficult to treat of skin cancers, malignant melanoma. According to an Oct. 15 Associated Press article, an 8-year study of more than 100,000 Scandinavian women between 30 and 50 yielded an undeniable correlation between regular artificial tanning and the incidence of melanoma. Among the studies' shocking (to the medical establishment, not me) findings were these: * Women over 30 who salon-tanned once a month or more increased their risk of developing melanoma by 55%. * Women under 30 who UV-baked once monthly saw their likelihood of developing melanoma skyrocket by approximately 150%! * The risks were identical for women of similar age regardless of hair color - a factor some in the mainstream deem significant in determining melanoma risk. These findings beg the questions: Will the government step in to regulate tanning, as they have with cigarettes and other carcinogenic products? (Would you get in a UV bed that displayed a cancer warning above it?) Will the courts start allowing cancer liability lawsuits against the tanning industry, as they have against the tobacco industry? I'm not saying these things should happen, mind you, I'm just wondering if they will... What's really tragic about this is the fact that while we're being duped into giving ourselves UV-induced skin cancer, we're missing out on the healthy sunlight we all need to RESIST cancer and disease. I'll try to keep from gloating about this because it's such a serious subject... But I'm definitely going to file this news flash under the " I told you so " heading in my file drawer: Scientists from the National Institute of Health have recently concluded that our nation is currently in the midst of a VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY CRISIS that's likely leading to skyrocketing rates of all kinds of diseases - from rickets and osteoporosis to diabetes, heart disease and many common cancers. Well, hallelujah! Conventional medicine is finally, grudgingly, seeing the light (wordplay intended) about something I've been saying for years: That all of the needless and misguided measures we've been taking to AVOID exposure to healthy, vitamin-D-rich sunlight are in fact increasing our risk of many diseases - some of them deadly. Now if we can just get the mainstream media to aggressively report this fact and convince people that there's no harm in a little sun, they might actually start SAVING some lives with their information... Instead of killing us by keeping us in the dark (literally). My advice? Turn off the TV that's turning you into a light-hating vampire and get outside for a little life-nourishing, vitamin D-rich sunshine. There's nothing better for your health - except maybe avoiding those cancer-causing tanning beds...
