Guest guest
Making a difference: Seattle's PCC Natural Markets generate 13,500 letters to Congress Here’s a story about how one group of health food stores is making a big difference in the battle to get genetically engineered foods labeled. PCC Natural Markets, a chain of seven stores in the Seattle area, generated a whopping 13,500 letters to Congress during its recent letter-writing campaign. PCC set up special stations and provided letters for shoppers in all of its stores from October 15 to November 9. The letters urged Washington-state Congress members to support H.R. 2916, the Genetically Engineered Foods Right To Know Act. If passed, H.R. 2916 would require genetically engineered foods to be labeled. It was the second time that PCC has held a letter-writing campaign on the issue – the first was in 2000. PCC notes that there’s a better chance of passing a bill now since it’s an election year, there’s nearly a year left in the current Congressional session, and there’s strong public support for labeling. ABC News earlier this year reported that 92 percent of Americans want genetically engineered foods labeled. We encourage other health food stores across the nation to follow PCC’s great example. Letter-writing campaigns in health food stores represent one of our strongest tools to apply pressure on Congress to pass labeling legislation. The Campaign makes it easy for health food stores to set up letter-writing stations for their customers. For a $100 donation, we will send a free “Take Action Center,” complete with an eight-slot display rack that holds educational literature and letters that folks can send to Congress.
