FDA Sued Over Antidepressant

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was sued over its failure to act on

a petition by Public Citizen, requesting the ban of nefazodone, an

antidepressant drug, that was filed over a year ago.

The drug is being marketed as Serzone and has been associated with an increasing

number of deaths and serious injuries caused by liver failure.

The public citizen’s suit asked for the court to determine the delayed actions

of the FDA as illegal and a danger to public health.

Reports showed that from April 1, 2002, through May 12, 2003, there were an

additional 33 reports of liver failure that included nine deaths that accounted

for a total of 55 patients diagnosed with liver failure.

The dangerous consequences of liver toxicity linked to nefazodone are compounded

by the way it prohibits one of the critical enzymes of the metabolism process,

thus increasing the toxicity levels of other medications the patient may be

taking.

Experts said the fact that the FDA is allowing doctors to continue to prescribe

Serzone to patients is an example of gross negligence.

Canada and Europe have already taken action and removed nefazodone from their

market and Australia and New Zealand are in the process of removing it from

their shelves.

The “black box” warning of life-threatening liver damage included on U.S.

packing inserts has been an ineffective strategy in curbing the number of liver

failures caused by taking nefazodone.

Over the years, drugs including Rezulin (for diabetes), Redux (for weight loss)

and the dietary supplement ephedra have been successfully banned by Public

Citizen.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

This is not very good news for the SSRI antidepressants considering all of the

recent links with suicide in children.

This is really a tragedy considering that making changes to the diet can treat

depression in many cases. Sugars and grains found in sodas, juices, candies and

vegetable oils are loaded with omega-6 fats along with a deficiency of omega-3

fats, which help combat depression.

You can review the comprehensive nutrition plan for further information on how

to eliminate sugars and grains from your diet, and view my EFT manual to help

address any emotional challenges that may be hindering your efforts.

Getting enough omega-3 fats is one of the most important tools in optimizing

your diet and warding off depression. An excellent source of these fats can be

found in high-quality cod liver oil and fish oil.

In my experience, I have had a large number of patients who have spontaneously

taken themselves off of antidepressants once they started taking fish oil.

The brand I highly recommend for both purity and effectiveness is Carlson’s,

which can be found on this site under the Recommended Products section.
