Guest guest
My boyfriend was recently diagnosed by my family doctor. He is 35 years old. She directed him to a psychologist for more precise diagnosis, but in the past 2 years he has been through the gammet of medications: lexapro was great but he couldn't sleep, paxil didn't work, and effexor made him practically suicidal. (He is still going through withdrawls after 6 weeks.) Now the family dr put him on Zyprexa, a mood stablizer-2.5 mg the lowest dose. He is a different person-more depressed than ever, raging, unconsoleable. I want to help him-I know St Johns Wort and Kava Kava are not the answers-maybe for some but not him. Can anyone recommend some sort of treatment that will work? Yoga, a better diet, reduced alcohol, etc should help-but there must be some answers. We are left the prey for pharmaceutical companies and frankly, they are taking away his mind!
Guest guest
Hi- I am so sorry that your boyfriend has been going through such hell. I know you said he has been to many doctors, but I would strongly recommend he go and see a psychopharmacologist. A good psychopharm will be able to treat him more effectively than a family doc, etc. These psychoparms are medical doctors trained in psychiatry and pharmacology and have a better succeess rate when it comes to finding the right meds.... At this point, since your boyfriend is in such an acute state of depression, I don't think the herbal remedies will do the trick. In any case, diet is a contributing facotr. He should cut out as much sugar and simple carbs as possible, limit caffeine intake, and up the protein. I suffer from depression and anxiety...I have found when I am in a " state " my body craves carbs which only seems to fuel the fire. I would also recommend Tai Chi, and or yoga (if he'll do it)...also accupuncture to get his " chi " (energy) flowing. Does he exercise? A good brisk 30 min. daily walk may help release some endporphins....One last thing...Reiki healing...defintely good for what ails you.... Hope he feels better soon- Alison , " BB " <bbes10 wrote: > > My boyfriend was recently diagnosed by my family doctor. He is 35 > years old. Guest guest
Diet and exercise are always a help. Trying to recall some things I've read and that you can " google " for more info, try looking at magnesium & calcium combo for depression, omega 3/fish oil for bipolar...if I'm remembering right. What type alcohol does he usually drink? Thinking of those I know of who drink, including an exhusband, beer wasn't bad but liquor always had more rage/behavior with it. And bipolar is tricky to treat anyway. Should never have on an SSRI/depression med without having a mood stabilizer along with it. Bipolar tends to run in families. Do you know of anyone else in his who has it? Chris in NC , " BB " <bbes10 wrote: > > My boyfriend was recently diagnosed by my family doctor. He is 35 > years old. Guest guest
Last year I was in a depression and went to see my naturopath. She suggested 5-htp and increasing my omega-3's in my diet. It definetly helped. I am sure that in the severe case your boyfriend it will take more, but maybe these can relieve him a bit. My sister was taking prescription antidepressants and they rob you of your spirit. I hope all goes well for you both.
