A year earlier I had started traveling withthe goal of visiting all the National Parks, but somehow I had gottensidetracked into drugs. In late 1960, I was in New York City, usingamphetamines, singing for a living, and sleeping on rooftops.Sometimes I worked packing boxes for minimum wage, and I sang on thestreets or in coffee houses for tips when I wasn't high on somesubstance or other. I'm 6 feet tall, yet I weighed about 115 pounds. Myfriends told me I'd be dead within a year, but I didn't really care. Atthe time, I had no definite plans, was very depressed and wasconsidering suicide. One day I was in Washington Square Park, and a man offered me asubstance I'd never tried before, and I took it. He only said a fewwords to me, and they were not about my behavior, my slovenly nature orattire, or my lifestyle choices. "This is nicotinic acid. Try it. Itwill help you."Simple words, and to someone like me, they meant another drug, anotherchance to "expand my mind". The name reminded me of nicotine and of LSD,or I wouldn't have touched it. I had never seen him before, and I neversaw him again, yet, no matter what that drug was, I would have taken it.Drugs can be scary things.I took two tablets because I was very courageous -- besides, they werefree. If he had called it by its common name, Niacin, or Vitamin B3, a vitaminsupplement, I would have actively avoided it. He offered it to anyonewho would take it. Amphetamine use was rampant at that time in GreenwichVillage, so probably many of us were deficient in B vitamins. No doubtthat's why this man chose to distribute vitamins to the young anddown-and-out. Who knows how many days or months, and what personalexpense he spent giving like this?I can't think of anything else that changed for me, but within a day Ihad decided to return home to San Diego and give up drugs, at least fora while, and I was on the road out of New York City. I had apparentlybeen lacking in Vitamin B3.I've been drug free for 34 years now, and I can honestly say I not onlydon't miss them, but deeply, deeply regret ever having taken them. Myvitamin man would probably be in his 80's or 90's now, so I'll almostcertainly never get the chance to thank him directly. Many people have helped me through difficult times, and out of difficultsituations, yet he stays in my mind. He didn't know me and I didn't knowhim, but I think he saved my life.

Guest guest
Dear Ilana, Abraham Hoffer is one of the very few Psychs I'd say anything nice about. He's one of the very few who actually tried to help his patients naturally. I've studied his work and found it interesting. About the only major critique I'd have to bring up would be his choice of Niacinamide rather than Niacin. He didn't realize that the flushing is necessary, so he chose the salt form of Vit B-3 rather than the acid form. As a result, he had to use massive doses of Niacinamide to deal with his Schizoid patients, whereas smaller amounts of Nicotinic Acid are far more effective. Love, Doc PS. I'll say it again, the "flush" from Vit B-3 Niacin is "absolutely necessary"!!! Guest guest
The "flush" of Niacin is actually radiation running out of the body. Sometimes we get exposed to tooooooo much of the stuff (radiation), and need to get rid of it. Niacin facilitates this. I've even seen where a person blew an old sun burn and the only place they didn't flush was where their bathing suit was. Amazing phenomenon. Niacin has other properties also, such as facilitating a full blown detox. Unless you know what you're doing, it is one of the few regimens that I recommend supervision for. Especially if one has a heavy drug history. I've seen more than one old ex-druggie go into a full blown ACID trip using this stuff. It will cause a major detox. Naaaa, ya want a partner with this one.
