Liver problems can cause this. You may want to put him on a liver cleanse. Of course, perhaps Suzi or Doc will have something different to say.

Blessed Be!

Hi guys,

My 5-year-old son is showing dark circles under his eyes which are a bit swollen. He sleeps fine - about 12 hours per night - so I doubt it's a lack of sleep. What else could be causing this? His diet is not very good at the moment, consisting of rice with chicken (sprouted and organic) and bread (organic) with tomato ketchup (organic). I know, but it's all he'll eat. I spent loads of money buying and preparing better foods, but he simply won't eat anything else. So I gave up, and let him eat what he wants, hoping he'll get sick of it soon, and move onto something better :-) I also give him TN in his juice, and he takes DMSO. He drinks store bought juice (organic) watered down (distilled water). And that's all. No sweets, no fruit, with only occasional peas as vegetables. About once a week I manage to get him to eat potatoes with carrots and fish. Oh yes, and I give him a Calcium/Magnesium drink each night after dinner.

Is he lacking some vital nutrient? Or is this something else?

At 5 yr old a liver cleanse may not be realistic without tying him down!

(No, don't do it.)

Try to offer MANY MANY times the good foods you want him to eat. Forget

the " balanced meal " think whole foods...an apple, a mango, etc.

The circles could be a vitamin deficiency- or the liver...or due to

congestion and allergies- breathing problems. My guess would be

allergies. Is he stuffed up a lot? He may be allergic and you might need

to eliminate the culprit. Food most likely. Wheat? Eggs? Dairy?

Environmental? Molds? If that's the case I have some ideas.

You could try YOGA/ Great for kids this age- well, some...and it will

introduce him to breathing.

I forget the number how many times one must offer at this age before

they will try something new.

I would keep expectations and pressure " low- but keep offering the good

stuff.

Try more raw foods...keep offering lot's of fruit choices and involve

him as much as possible. My 4 yr old loves food that HE grew and helps

prepare.

Mine is super fussy too....

Lisa, sometimes the sinuses can have hard congestion built up. Maybe some Total Tonic for a week would do the trick. Wouldn't hurt to add the Echinacea formula as well. I get the dark circles whenever my sinuses flare.

Hi Suzi and Elizabeth,

if Jamie does have an allergy, I don't know what this is, so I'd have to do some testing. Jamie is allergic to dairy products, so doesn't have any in his diet. We've known about this since he was 3 months old. We use Almond milk instead, and before that, Soymilk.

I doubt it could be wheat. He's eaten wheat for some years already, and never had this problem that I can remember.

No, no sinus problems that I am aware of. Occasional colds, but that's it, and he doesn't have one now. No breathing problems.

Jamie has phases of food. First it was potatoes and carrots for about a year. Then it was pasta for about 2 years, until Doc told me not to give him it. Then (and still is) it was rice and chicken!! He also went through loads of bananas (about 1 kg per day!) for about a year or so, but when he went off that, there was nothing else he wanted instead.

Jamie does have digestive problems though - I think this started since he started eating bread (perhaps 6 months or so ago). He often complains of tummy pain, and the area right under the breastbone. I've tried him on home-made and store-bought sprouted bread, but he just won't have it. I know I need to replace it with something else, but haven't found anything else he likes instead! Still looking though :-)

love,

Lisa

what about the kidneys?

also found this in searching..thought I would send it..

:

look at what you might be eating/drinking... in kidney involvement, it is very important to NOT use any diet sodas or anything containing artificial sweeteners; also, how much water are you drinking (recommended is 1/2 your body weight in ounces every day - and few people do this); what does your urine look like? Also, water should be pure - don't drink tap water and bottled spring water (it usually has high sodium content).

The most common cause of dark bluish circles under the eyes is congestion of the nose. The veins from the eyes drain into the veins of the nose. If the nose is blocked up, the veins around the eyes become larger and darker. To understand what's going on, we need to look at the nose. These dark circles are sometimes called allergic shiners because nasal congestion is usually caused by nasal allergy or hay fever. Dark circles are also caused by chronic sinus infections, recurrent colds, or blockage of the nose by large adenoids. (If the dark circles are caused by large adenoids, your child probably breathes mostly through his mouth instead of his nose.) Dark circles under the eyes are especially noticeable in children with fair complexions. Overall, dark circles under the eyes are not a sign of poor health or troubled sleep.

Dark circles under the eyes are often an indicator of an iron deficiency. You may want to visit your health practitioner or physician and have your blood tested in order to confirm or rule out this possibility. If low iron is not the problem, then the dark color under your eyes may be caused by allergies or by problems with your liver or kidneys. By the way, your liver and kidneys can take quite a bit of "abuse" via poor dietary habits and excessive use of drugs and alcohol. When these two organs start to "fail" it’s often too late for them to repair themselves! The dark circles are simply a warning sign that you need to pay attention to your body!

Professionally, I’ve seen these circles disappear in individuals who stopped drinking high amounts of coffee and alcohol, increased their water intake and started eating a healthy diet which includes lots of raw fruits and vegetables. Additionally, if you are a person who eats meat two to three times per day in moderate to large amounts and not drinking plenty of water, your kidneys may be signaling you that they’re a bit tired of working that hard! High protein diets will cause your kidneys to work harder than if you were eating less meat and more good carbohydrates, veggies and fruit! If you suspect environmental allergies to be the culprit, address the problem via an allergy/environmental healthy specialist.

It sounds like diet IS the place to focus...joyfully ;-)

Try switching the rice to millet.

Try to add raw organic food. Offer some at every meal. Try smoothies and

raw juices.

The carrot beet apple is nice and sweet and very good for the liver-

plus loaded with nutrients. I would begin the day with water and fruit-

all organic and pure. He will get used to foods if you offer them again

and again. Mango and papaya are great for digestion.

I would use very little cooked grains and meat. The so called " balanced

diet " is a myth.

Will he eat yogurt? I like whole milk goat's, sheep's or cow's yogurt

unsweetened and then add a little agave, maple syrup, or stevia. Add raw

almond butter and flax and stir.

You can make a cleansing lemonade to start the day- fresh squeeze add to

pure water and add agave or stevia. Blend w/ ice for a slushy. make your

own " ice cream " w/ frozen bananas in a champion or green power juicer.

If you don't have a juicer I would get one.

eating the same limited diet every day is a good way to end up w/

trouble.

Try to give lot's of raw foods.

Good luck!

Elizabeth

Thanks Suzi. I observed Jamie in his breathing, and discovered he is breathing more through his mouth right now than through his nose! So although he doesn't have a cold, he does seem to be congested.

I've taken Janet's advice, and started him on TT and Echinacea this morning!! That should unblock that area.

Thanks everyone for your input! I always thought that lack of sleep was the cause, but had no idea of all this other information!

love,

Lisa
