Fact is, that is my part of the "woods". I am very familiar with the flooding problem, as well as the United States Army Corp of Engineers. Intimately you may say. Refer to www.strongconcrete.com. Part of my patent is exclusively focused on a new flood protection barrier for the USACE (United States Army Corp of Engineers). I was dialoging with them clear back in '97 or '98 on this subject. I spoke with senators, congressmen, the then governor's office, Coast 2050 coalition etc., etc., etc. I explained, and explained, and explained. I was pretty much treated like, well, like nothing. And what I had was nothing unless they wanted it. I am intimately familiar with the Louisiana thing. Part of my patent was specifically written with Louisiana specifically in mind. Too late. I can't be of much use now. Had they been using what I have for just the floodwater protection part they could have "beefed up" every week point on Lake Pontchartrain with my system, and this disaster would never have happened. Surely the Corp of Engineers had a perfomance model that predicted a failure of this type was imminent under the right conditions? You know why I was never listened to? Because people wouldn't tell their elected officials to listen to me, and the experts were to busy being experts and not being human. I told them 1, 2, 3 linear miles per month manufacturing and installation rates at costs that were less than half or so of what they pay right now for similar performance works. All they needed was 2 or 3 feet higher in floodwater protection barrier. The levees beefed up subsurface with this matrix. In the past 5 years I could have installed over 150 linear miles of protection for around 300 million dollars if that is what our officials who are charged with our safety, welfare, and well-being should have been concerned with. Damage estimate now? How many lives? How much sadness to be faced by the survivors? How much money, 10, 30 billion in damages? So who is penny wise and pound foolish? I told them it was coming, scientists told them it was coming, coalitions and citizens told them it was comming, and cried for help to prempt such a disaster. And I had an answer for them all along with a way reasonable cost. But you know the old saying, no sense in locking the doors to the barn after the horse has already gone out. Or could it be "You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink". Can't drink the water in the streets of New Orleans right now either, whatever. I sent out approximately 1,000 to 2,000 emails to individuals over the last several years. No one cared. These people were/are/were? in Mississippi, and Louisiana. Guess what they have now? Sadness. No I couldn't have prevented the problem as it is now, but perhaps, if I had been given an opportunity or a chance to, I could have done some good, or softened the blow for some. Only the good Lord knows. The way I see it, even people who read this right now probably are not going to go to www.strongconcrete.com and really look at it, or read it, or scrutinize it, or consider it for the great potentials and probabilities it possesses. No, they are more interested in standing on soap boxes, hanging around on crosses, or running around screaming "the sky is falling, the sky is falling!!!" like Chicken Little. Nothing begets nothing, inaction brings around no action. Comes a time when people should look at the bigger picture. Just a thought. People just don't get it. New Orleans is in a lot of trouble right now. I pray for them. Sad thing is, this wasn't even "The big one" for New Orleans. It is still out there, waiting, gathering strength. Maybe not today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, but it is coming. And the same holds true for every other sea coast community, village, town or city in the United States and elsewhere. It only gets worse unless people prepare. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. We can't all just go running and stick our heads in the sand like an ostrich. Maybe the readers can voice something, tell their senators or congressmen. They live on our tax dollars, let's get something back in exchange for them. Sincerely, William H.
