The article, "Doctors for mercury" (1) is appreciated. Despite mercury's well documented adverse effects, why do some in the medical and research communities continue to recommend thimerosal-containing vaccines? A recent essay by George Monbiot supports a likely answer (2). With saddened spirit, I accept that pharmaceutical companies want thimerosal to be injected into as many pregnant women, infants, and toddlers as possible because the symptoms so induced require medications which are highly profitable. That damaged health would be a corporate goal and that various academics would defend injurious substances have precedent (eg, 2). As presented in former NEJM editor Marcia Angell's book (3), pharmaceutical companies have enough yearly net profit so as to virtually own influential politicians such as Frist. We are living amidst an orthodoxy rooted in patenting toxins and medications and in allowing of toxins into the biosphere and into our bodies because the illnesses so induced augment pharmaceutical profits. Were a comparison enacted, the injecting of thimerosal would probably be found far more effective at inducing symptoms than various low-dose exposures such as pesticides, air pollution, PBDEs, etc.1. *The Age of Autism: Doctors for mercury*By DAN OLMSTEDUPI Senior EditorWASHINGTON, Feb. 9 (UPI)http://www.upi.com/ConsumerHealthDaily/view.php?StoryID=20060209-112409-9590r2. *Exposed: The Secret Corporate Funding Behind Health Research*Academics and the media have failed dismally to ask the crucial question of scientists' claims: who is paying you?by George MonbiotTuesday, February 7, 2006 by the Guardian/UKhttp://www.commondreams.org/views06/0207-25.htmhttp://business.guardian.co.uk/story/0,,1704107,00.html3. *The Truth about Drug Companies...*
