Banning vitamin C - whatever next?

CONSERVATIVE shadow health spokesman John Baron MP was

in Yeovil recently to urge residents to sign an online

petition to save vitamins and minerals being banned by

the EU.

The Government is introducing an EU food supplements

directive which will result in a number of vitamins

and supplements being withdrawn simply because they

contain nutrients which are not on the EUs list of

permitted ingredients.

The Conservatives have now launched its Save our

Supplements campaign and Mr Baron visited the Ceres

health food store in Princes Street, Yeovil, along

with local Tory spokesman Ian Jenkins to promote the

campaign.

Mr Baron said: Vitamins like 1gm Vitamin C, currently

on sale in many high streets, will be banned not for

safety reasons but in the name of European

harmonisation! This is madness, and it must be stopped

The Conservatives have launched an online petition

which can be found at www.conservatives.com/vitamins

and there are campaign postcards to sign which can be

found in most health shops. The campaign is backed by

independent bodies Consumers for Health Choice, the

Health Food Manufacturers Association and the National

Association of Health Stores.

Mr Jenkins added: The EU must stop meddling in our

everyday lives and leave our vitamins alone.

I urge residents to sign the postcards in the health

shops or sign our e-petition. With the publics help,

we can force ministers to preserve access to these

products on behalf of local consumers.

Food supplements and vitamins which are safe should

remain available to consumers regardless of what the

EU wishes.

Well known figures such as Sir Paul McCartney, Sir

Elton John, Sir Cliff Richard, Phil Collins, Robert

Hardy, Jools Holland, Jenny Seagrove and David Wilkie

are also backing the campaign.
