First, it was funded by the U.K. Ministry of Defence, which therefore already has a strike against it. Second, it is a questionnaire study, which is suspect. Third, it concludes that no single cause could be identified. This is hardly a big surprise. Why would anyone think there is a single cause of this syndrome of illnessess that soldiers report? Furthermore, the type of study evidence being pursued, without the benefit of sufficiently understanding potential mechanisms involved that allow for disease to develop, namely biological evidence, is a waste of time and money. Another 50 studies of this type will not amount to any clear direction. What is badly needed is some clear thinking about the manner in which the body fails to adapt to either combat conditions or fear of combat. We take much too lightly the trauma that can occur in the world of war. Scientists involved in pursuing clues to Gulf War Syndrome should probably spend a few months preparing for war to get a better notion of the extraordinary impact such preparation, and then later possible combat, means when it comes to human health. Not to mention the array of environmental conditions that superimpose on this process once someone becomes fully or partially engaged in war.
