Where? You didn't give us a place to vote.

An open mind, we are told, lets in everything.... But so does a garbage can.

An open mind must first screen an argument for its relationship to common

sense and virtue before investing in its serious consideration. (Michael Long)

" Question of the Day "

Do you think Dan Rather should be fired?

21 Sep 2004 10:45:54 -0700

Today's Question:

Do you think Dan Rather should be fired for the fake documents scandal at CBS?

Sept. 21, 2004, Tuesday

To vote,

To e-mail us your thoughts,

Some background:

Within the next few days, CBS News expects to name an independent panel of

experts to scrutinize its reporting of President Bush’s National Guard service

after its defenses for airing the explosive story crumbled.

Eleven days after questions surfaced about Dan Rather’s “60 Minutes” report, the

network apologized Monday and said it could not vouch for the authenticity of

documents impugning the president’s Guard service.

“I want to say, personally and directly, I’m sorry,” a subdued Rather said

Monday on the “CBS Evening News.”

It was humbling for a news division that once ruled television, for TV’s

pre-eminent newsmagazine and for Rather himself, at 72 already struggling

against fading ratings and influence. Now CBS opens its doors to an outside

panel that will assign blame.

“I think it will be helpful, given the attention this story has received, for

cool, collected, independent voices of unchallenged integrity to examine the

process,” CBS News President Andrew Heyward said. Click here to read more about

this story.

Shuster reports: Monday was an awful day for one of television’s proudest news

divisions. CBS News, the network of Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite, issued

a monumental apology. The network acknowledged it should not have relied upon

questionable documents used in a story challenging President Bush’s military

service.

Barnicle blogs: It's a big deal when the president shows up in a place like

Derry, NH. The locals are proud and excited. The cops and Secret Service put on

a show for adults and kids alike, stopping traffic until the limo whips by in a

blur of blue lights and cruisers.

Yesterday, we asked you " Do you believe there is a policy that could work in

Iraq or is it hopeless? " 62 percent of you said " it is hopeless. "

Related stories in the news today:

President Bush defended his decision to invade Iraq in a speech on Tuesday to

the United Nations, urging the world community to turn its attention to fighting

the war on terrorism and humanitarian concerns. Read more.

Relatives and colleagues of two Western construction contractors who were

snatched from their homes in Iraq pleaded for their release Tuesday, a day after

a third colleague held hostage was beheaded by his kidnappers. Read more.

Here are some of your thoughts:

" Unless we have a new President who can mend foreign policy, tell the truth to

the people, and knows when to change course rather than 'do what I say, and say

what I do' type of person, or one that stays the course, nothing will get any

better, but only worst. Can we really go through another four years of the same

failed polices and leadership, I think not. It's time for a change. " -Lowdowski,

Kansas City

" The insuurgents want our country to be in doubt about the future of the Iraq

war when they go to the polls. They would prefer that Kerry be in power as he is

not committed to see that Iraq has a democracy. " -Nancy Otte, Bedford, IN

" I cannot believe the Bush Administration could not have forseen this quagmire.

Will a draft be next? Would he send his girls? I am fearful for America with

people of this mentality in charge. Greed and ignorance is their creed! " -Debra

Enders, Boston, MA
