The FDA's reluctant Vioxx " veto "

OK, before you all cry " foul, " I'll disclose this fact right off the

bat, for those of you who don't know it already.

It was an FDA researcher's epidemiological study of 1.4 million

patients that proved to be Vioxx's Waterloo.

There, I said it. The FDA drove the final nail in the coffin, which

ultimately sealed Vioxx's fate. But that doesn't change the fact

that

in the 4-and-a-half year span of time between 1999 (when concerns

were first raised about the drug) and late 2004 (when the

medication was pulled from the market), the FDA either blithely

looked the other way when it came to this deadly drug or exercised

the regulatory equivalent of shooting rubber bands at a tank!

Not that this surprises me, given the agency's history - just look

how they bungled the recent pediatric antidepressant situation:

First ignoring it, then defending it, then finally investigating.

And

now, on the heels of this scandal, they're facing Congressional fire

for the Vioxx scandal. Good. They deserve it. Why?

Because the Food and Drug Administration is a mess, that's why.

It doesn't do what it's supposed to do (protect us from killer

drugs), and it does what it isn't supposed to do (facilitate drug

makers' profits at the cost of our lives). This latest Vioxx fiasco

isn't a revelation; it merely shows us this condition in

Technicolor.

Case in point: According to the New York Times piece I was

summarizing in the last Daily Dose, the FDA...

* Ignored its own authorities, who for years raised questions

about Vioxx's possible heart risks - including one " red

flag " review from BEFORE THE DRUG WAS EVEN

APPROVED

* Failed to act decisively even after a 2001 conference

convened specifically to assess Vioxx's risks concluded

that there WAS cause for concern - instead they simply

agreed on the need for " more studies "

* Barely slapped Merck on the wrist (they sent the drug giant

a LETTER - Oooh) for glossing over Vioxx's risks in the

drug's extensive marketing campaign

* Nixed a proposal for a study to specifically measure

Vioxx's heart risks, citing vague logistical and ethical

roadblocks

On the other hand, the FDA DID require Merck to put a warning

label on the product for those with heart conditions, and of course,

it also conducted the study that finally toppled the drug. See what

I

mean when I say the agency is at war with itself?

And yet, even with the Vioxx story plastered all over the headlines,

the FDA continues to shoot itself in the foot over arthritis drugs.

Déjà vu all over again

Mirroring almost exactly its treatment of one of its own drug

experts during the height of this past year's prolonged pediatric

antidepressant/suicide saga, the FDA has " disinvited " a federal

drug safety advisor to an upcoming meeting on the risks of Vioxx

and other similar drugs, called Cox-2 inhibitors.

According to an Associated Press online report, the expert was

notified of his booting by an FDA official on Veteran's Day -

while the agency's doors were CLOSED for the holiday. Odd,

huh?

A spokesperson for the FDA told the AP that such occurrences are

common when there are concerns about conflicts of interest. What

conflicts of interest? Oh, perhaps the fact that this expert - a

Wake Forest School of Medicine Professor - was about to present

research that ANOTHER popular arthritis drug poses heart risks

nearly identical to those proven to be associated with Vioxx...

And that just won't do for the FDA's image, will it?

During the February conference, the remaining advisors will

review all the available evidence on this class of medications

(except, of course, this key expert's damning evidence implicating

another multi-billion dollar drug), including confidential results

of

several unpublished trials.

I, for one, am very interested in what their conclusions will be.

Never shooting myself in the foot - but always shooting you

straight,

Hi Maryann!

Arthritis responds well to essential fatty acid supplementation,

although in my opinion, it would take more than just the n-3s in

flax oils to do the job effectively because many people (especially

those who are very ill) do not have the ability to convert it into a

form which can be readily metabolized. There needs to be the correct

anti-inflammatory combination of omega 3, 6 and 9 to alleviate joint pain.

Visit:

http://www.udoerasmus.com

Udo's Choice (Certified Organic)

Perfected 3, 6, 9 Oil Blend Ingredients

The label reads as follows:

Organic flaxseed oil;

nourishes the ligaments and tissues around bone

organic sunflower seed oil;

organic sesame seed oil; High B Vitamin Content and Lecithin

rice and oat germ oils;

medium chain triglycerides (MCTs);

organic evening primrose oil;preformed GLA

lecithin (guaranteed GMO-free);

vitamin E;

antioxidants (tocotrienols);

and

rosemary oil.

Udo's is a fine combination of oils which I find quite fabulous for

healing, and this includes arthritis and Raynaud's as well. In fact

many illnesses are caused by an imbalance of n-3s and n-6s which is

so prevalent in the Standard American diet of processed refined

devitalized foods (the ratio is literally 30 to 1 in some instances

in favor of omega 6 oils which are highly inflammatory!.

Udo has sourced out these natural components in just the correct

ratio in order to provide a more healthy balance of n-3s,n-6s and n-

9s.

If you do the research you will find this balance has been found to

benefit more than one illness. I would venture to say that every one

including cancer has responded well to this essential oil blend.

Udo himself overcame debilitating illness this oil combination. He

formulated it for himself, actually. Just read the comments on his

site.
