Guest guest
Dear EmailNation Subscriber, There is virtually no chance that the Senate will block the nomination of White House counsel Alberto Gonzales to serve as Attorney General. But, as the vote approaches, critics of Gonzales have the potential to garner a stronger vote against his confirmation than they did in one or both of the last two fights over controversial conservative nominees to guide the Department of Justice: Edwin Meese in 1985 and John Ashcroft in 2001. As John Nichols argues in The Online Beat, it would be meaningful if opponents of the Bush Administration's hostile approach to civil liberties and international law could muster as many votes against the current nominee as they did against Meese. " This can be a serious challenge to the Bush Administration's wrong-minded war, its abuses of civil liberties, and its callous disregard for the rule of the law " Nichols writes. http://www.thenation.com/thebeat/index.mhtml?bid=1 & pid=2167 And don't miss Senator Robert Byrd's remarks on the Senate floor this morning. During the speech, Byrd expressed strong concerns about Gonzales's role in the prisoner abuse scandals in Iraq and at Guantanamo Bay, and the use of torture as an approved American interrogation policy. Byrd also told his colleagues that the nominee, as the White House Counsel, has been responsible for policies that undermine the principles of the US Constitution. http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0202-32.htm You can also still write your own Senator, imploring them to vote no: http://capwiz.com/thenation/mail/oneclick_compose/?alertid=6867671 Watch this space tomorrow morning for info on commentary and analysis of tonight's State of the Union speech by President Bush.
