Guest guest
Effexor is typically an antidepressant that's given to the elderly. Yes, it does have bad side effects when you try to get off of it, don't stop it without a physician's assistance. It's an older antidepressant, some doctors call it a " dirty drug " because of its side effects. I take lexapro -- which really saved my sanity while I was under extreme pressure and stress. Lexapro is an antidepressant you can stop when you want to because it has a long " half life " . I have a problem with doctors who prescribe effexor now days, when there's such better meds to take. Sometimes people need something stronger than herbs when they've been under stress for a long time. You might want to visit a psychiatrist and ask him/her to get you on something that will be easier to get off once you're ready. I am down to one pill. I use to take two. Please, do all your research on this medication. Doctors rarely know the long term effects of these medications. I read a book called the antidepressant solution, written by Brian Weiss. It describes how doctors are not given all the information and how there is phony researh on a lot of medications. It other words, bogus literature. Not saying this medication is harmful, however Please ask your pharmacist about all potential side effects and possible addictions. All medications that rewire your brain have potential side effects and possible addiction. There is a list of anti depressants that are addictive, including some new ones in the last five years or so. I have had to do a lot of my own research on anti depressants because the general public is not aware, nor the doctors. The doctors do not have the time because of patient load and other factors. Please do your research. I have PTSD as well and know it is NO picnic. I have found that alternative accupuncture and other body therapies to be more helpful. There is a list of medications that originally thought of as safe are not not prescribed much, because of the potential for addiction and nerve damage. Valium was considered a SAFE med when it first came out on the markert, as well as other medications. They do not have time to do long term studies on the long range effects. If I described how my withdrawal was and still is, you would not take another pill. Nightmarish is the only word to describe it. Plus, most anti depressants inhibit the dream cycle which is important in healing your mind and body. Cheers, Mary
Guest guest
02/15/2007, Thursday Effexor is a medication that works on 2 neurotransmitters. Not 1 like most of the others anti-depressants. edgetexlady <rbright wrote: Effexor is typically an antidepressant that's given to the elderly. Guest guest
I absolutely hate this medicine. I have been stuck on it since 1999 and I have a hard time getting off. I tried to get off while pregnant and did a slow wean...down one dose a month, and I screwed myself up and had to go back up. I've found a program that can help one wean off meds....once I get my other stuff balanced....that I'm going to try and do an even slower wean off. It's different for everyone...some people have had no problems getting off of it....some have. I cannot wait to get off these meds...but I cannot handle withdrawals. Guest guest
I've been on Effexor XR for a couple of years. They tried all the others before putting me on it but Effexor was the only one that really helped. I started out on 300 mg a day and now only take 150 mg a day. If I miss a dose I get really sick. But I think a lot of that has to do with the high dosage I use. My Wife only takes 75 mg a day and if she misses a dose shes irritable but otherwise fine. I'd love to get off the stuff and have a program I heard about on the radio but I just haven't had the time to sit down and really look at it. Supposably you can get off almost all drugs and alcohol if you follow the program. Oh and be very careful if you do drink while taking Effexor It will effect the breathalizer test. And not in a good way. , " Frazz " <frazzmomto4 wrote: > > What are everyone's thoughts about this drug? > > As I read in a recent post, I, too went to the doctor complaining of > some memory loss, irritability, no motivation to do anything, kinda > worthlessness and she put me on Effexor. Guest guest
Reading the replies to this concern is really very interesting to me. About six years ago now I was perscribed 75mg of Effexor XR and took it for a few months, after not recievng any benefits from the drug I decided to take myself off. It was the absolute worst two weeks of my life!! My mind was so out of wack it was crazy! I cried myself to sleep every night not knowing why I was crying. I got the shakes sooooo bad about 24 hours after being off the drug which lasted for days. I called the doctor and he more or less told me it didn't make sense that my symptoms were from coming off the drug as it should have been out of my system after about three days. About a year prior to that I had tried Prozac 25 mg for about six months and also did not recieve any benefit and took myself off that drug and also had similar after effects though not as bad. I just thought I would comment and let you all know we really aren't as " crazy " as " some " may think we are.... and to the person requesting info on this drug.... be cautious. Good Luck!! , " sarisalsa " <sarisalsa wrote: > > have you gain lots of weight with that medication? i know for a fact > when and if you decided to get off this med ,,, do it very very very > slowly. the headaches are awlfull, the nightmares are even worse. i > would not recomend this drug to anyone. it's really hard on your > nervous system .........but if it works for you ? just be carefull > and think of some other kind perhaps you can try. zoloft, > paxil ..good > luck.................................................................. > .................................................................... ... > .............................--- In > , " Harry " <scotchdrnkr@> wrote: > > > > I've been on Effexor XR for a couple of years.
