Guest guest
Hello, I have an odd request for the list. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to ask for help in this, but since it is to continue my path in alternative/complimentary medicine, I decided to write. I will only write this one email on the subject, don't worry. I am a lurker and I don't believe I've written in before. If so, it was when I first joined as an introduction. I'm in a catch 22 that is keeping me from following my hopes to expand my part in complimentary therapy and I am very much hoping that someone on here can help me with referrals or suggestions. I am a Reiki practitioner and enjoy this very much. I have been called in my heart for more than a year to become involved in harp therapy. These programs play in hospitals, retirement homes, and hospice settings, generally. I am hoping to combine the Reiki and harp therapy if clients will allow, if not, I can do one or the other for them. I am self taught and have a very nice lap harp that I truly love. Music is such a comfort. Upon contacting the harp therapy program, they told me that they would like a year of formal lessons to apply. This was a stumbling block as I am quite rural. I have finally found a teacher who will instruct me and is only an hour away. I can make that drive a couple of times a month and afford the lessons. The rub is that she will only teach on a pedal harp or a fully levered floor harp (that has the same spacing as a pedal...she really prefers Troubadours). I can either afford harp lessons or I can afford a used harp payment. I cannot swing both. I am wondering if anyone knows of scholarships that may be available for alternative therapies. I am absolutely glad to have Mary document my attendance or provide a specified amount of community service per month, etc as terms of the scholarship. Or if anyone has (or knows someone who has) a harp that isn't being played and would consider a barter of just about any kind, please consider contacting me. Cosmetic damage is not a concern. I would just ask that it be playable or need only small repairs. The harp would be loved and played often. I thought about trying to get one on loan. I have no idea where I could do that at, but even if I would find one on loan, I'm sure I will continue my lessons beyond the year and that makes that a less reasonable option. Mary is an accomplished harpist and I'm sure has much to teach. I can't just use hers at lessons because I will need to practice on the bigger harp (they have more octaves) at home each day. The good news is that I already have my small harp that I'll use when I am in the harp therapy program. The bad news is that I have to find a floor harp and I don't have the funds. I know this is an incredible longshot, and I feel so nervous asking that my hands are shaking. I am using the Secret and the idea to write to the list came to me this afternoon. I hope it was because there is a solution here. This is already long, and I don't want to take up more space on the list. If you want more information, have a suggestion, or would consider a barter, please contact me off list at stlake any help in pursuing this would be absolutely appreciated. If you know someone who might be able to help, please do forward my email. Thank you so much for your time and energy in reading this. Love and light to all, Tracy
Guest guest
This is only a suggestion, but if you are that drawn to play the harp, and already know how, and already do reiki--you don't need a " certificate " to go into nursing homes, hospitals, etc. Yes, it's nice to go in under their therapy certification, but trust me--all nursing homes love any visitor that will come and just spend time with their residents. Normally hospitals don t mind either. Most churches send their ministers and the ministers stop at each room and ask if the patient would like to pray or talk. You could do the same. Just contact the hospital first and ask if it's ok if you come and play for the patients that say ok to you. Same with the nursing homes. So many people in the homes never have visitors and for someone to come and play! Well, they will love it. Many nursing homes have special programs set up once a week or so for group entertainment. I had a friend that played piano every week at local homes. The residents certainly looked forward to it, and got great benefit from it. You'd be doing the same and could either do it in the group setting or just tell the staff that you'd like to do one-on-one sessions. You could send out your healing energy via the harp, and your reiki, and not even have to tell them that's what you are doing. All you'd need to tell the staff is that you like playing to the residents! Today we have so much energy available to us, and if you are being led to help others, then don't wait for the ok from some group or person. Just do it. Guest guest
Hello Renee, Thank you for your response. I appreciate your suggestions. I am also a nurse and have worked in both hospital and long term care settings. I chose to be a stay at home mom eight years ago. That is when I began pursuing my interest in complimentary therapies. I agree that many people enjoy the visits of even strangers. There is much loneliness and fear in these places. Truly even if you only visit with people for a while, it's welcome. Everyone wants to feel special and heard. It's a wonderful gift that we can all give to others. My local hospital wants certification. I understand what you are saying about clergy visiting, but they do have a title and a backing organization. From reading discussions on my harp groups , there do seem to be some very beneficial aspects to the certification program. Playing therapeutically is not the same as just playing for enjoyment or relaxation from what I understand. I really do want to pursue this as a therapy choice. As far as sending Reiki or sending healing energy while playing the harp without disclosing that was what I was doing. I just wouldn't feel comfortable with that. I know many people send energy to the higher self/selves of those they are working with without their conscious knowledge/permission. I myself am just not comfortable doing so unless it's something they are aware of and would like to experience. This is my personal choice and in no way do I mean it as anything other than that. This may even be a residual effect of watching people be pushed to choose a particular treatment or testing by doctors when I was working. Even when it might not be something they really wanted. We can certainly all do volunteer work of many kinds that are welcome and helpful. Certification would be an enhancement for me as I could then play my harp therapeutically and be comfortable doing so. I feel called to participate in this and I also feel sure that it will work out. If it's meant to be, the path will unfold in front of me.
