The word " metabolic syndrome " sounds somewhat difficult to understand

for many. Here, I'll explain it in a simple way for you to understand

and to get healthy and live longer.

Recently, we often hear the word metabolic syndrome in the mass

communications and the like. If you translate it, it

means " metabolism " , " catabolism " , or " anabolism " . You may still have

hard time to understand, haven't you? It's because the word

metabolism is not used generally.

None of us is the same as yesterday. Obtaining nutrients from foods

and converting it to energy is necessary to sustain life. In

addition, they create body components and maintain the growth of the

body. This kind of work or mechanism is called " metabolism " .

When the function of the metabolism becomes abnormal, we can call it

as metabolic syndrome. For example, sugars and fats are converted to

energy, and the excess energy is stored in the shape of fat and kept

as provision for starvation.

We normally need energy of about 2,000 kcal and about 2,500 ml of

water from food. Yes, we use those everyday to be active and alive.

Therefore, you are consuming about 700,000 kcal and drinking about

1,000 liters of water in one year. However, do you notice that you

are not so much different compare to a year ago? You are practically

the same size, the same height, and the same weight. There are no

significant differences with sizes, weight and appearances with our

body. It is because the metabolic system is working to maintain the

organisms (microorganisms) as uniform as possible.

Metabolic syndrome points to a state where stability of metabolism

has beenbroken. This irregularity is likely caused by being " obese "

or " overweight " , and unable to maintain the body's fat and sugar.

Furthermore, a disordered metabolic system can have adverse effect

like " high blood pressure " .

" Too much eating " and " insufficient exercise " can trigger " insulin

resistance " (also a form of metabolic syndrome) because of

accumulated excess body fats and can also lead to " diabetes " ,

increased cholesterol amount in the body, heart diseases and other

heart or blood related problems.

In other words, the common causes of metabolic syndrome are more

likely due to physical inactivity and too much caloric intake.

Let us drink proper quantity of water everyday. Let us eat well

proper diet and exercise daily. Let us do 100 steps of backward

walking everyday in the morning. Let us think good and do good. Then,

you can be healthy physically and mentally.

For sure, you understand METABOLIC SYNDROME very well now.

METABOLISM TRIVIA

If our metabolisms ran as fast as a squirrel's, we'd eat the

equivalent of 85 burgers a day. Here's some interesting if not

meaningless facts:

* Calories burned daily by the average 130-pound woman: 1,400

* Calories burned daily by the average 155-pound man: 1,800

* Calories burned daily by the average rat: 30

* Calories burned daily by the average cow: 5,500

* Excess daily calories required to gain 10 pounds in a year: 100

* Percentage of Americans who are physically active (including

walking): 22
