Guest guest
Wounds that don't heal and resist all conventional medicine can have a tragic effect on the sufferer's quality of life. Leg ulcers, bed sores and pressure wounds can become chronic conditions with little or no relief available. What can you do when you have tried all the conventional treatments without success? What about honey? Modern medical science is now confirming the many healing properties of honey. Since Biblical times, honey has been used to treat wounds, stomach and body ulcers, burns and sores. Active Manuka honey, in particular has been found to have high anti-bacterial properties that attack infection. This can be particularly important in wounds that don't heal. But how does Active Manuka honey work? The anti-bacterial properties (the hydrogen peroxide present in honey), and the unidentified phytochemical factor (UMF) work against the bacteria that cause infection. Scientific tests have shown that Active Manuka honey dressings can promote the clearing of infectious bacteria, provide a moisture barrier to stop dressings sticking, draw dirt out of the wound bed, inhibit the odour of infected wounds, have anti-inflammatory action and destroy only harmful bacteria thus ensuring the promotion of healthy tissue. Medical professionals are trialling a new idea based on an old remedy. Doctors at a Liverpool Hospital have been conducting clinical trials on chronic leg ulcers using Active Manuka honey dressings and many other doctors and surgeons are using large dressings impregnated with a high potency Active Manuka honey .. Active Manuka honey (honey containing UMF) has extremely effective anti-bacterial properties which remain active over long periods. This is exploited by applying Active Manuka honey dressings or impregnating Active Manuka honey into a large dressing pad, the anti-bacterial properties can get to work on the bacteria causing the infection. The treatment has been tried as an ulcer treatment on chronic leg ulcers. It has also been applied to burns and post-operative wounds. Bed sores are a particularly nasty kind of ulcer and it is to be hoped that this new treatment might offer some relief in that area in the future. Hopefully, these trials will offer a new solution to wounds that don't heal and give some new hope to long term chronic ulcer sufferers for an alternative ulcer treatment.
