This is the cornerstone of a successful postgraduate education in one or more subjects, which culminates in highly specialized research, allowing one to advance vertically in a competitive research arena. A broad-based training in the scientific methods of research and communication is essential from the first day a PG enters the world of research. PG and further education offer the opportunity to conduct research and publish one’s findings. What is research? Research is the original investigation undertaken to gain knowledge and understand concepts in any facet of a major subject of specialization. The building blocks of research are ideas, creative and critical thinking, curiosity and diligent to work. Together, these should produce new knowledge for societal benefit, advance knowledge in the field, and strengthen the researcher’s career prospects. A successful career requires balance between research and publication. When we first step into the laboratory, how well exposed are we to the process of conducting research, let alone the multiple and complex steps involved in analyzing data and publishing? PG students should be empowered to master the techniques of scientific research, experimental design, protocol writing, communication and ethics.  Several groups of teachers throughout India have been conducting workshops for several years, training both PGs and teachers in the basics of research and publication. Thanks to them for their sustained efforts. With the goal to improve academically and professionally in order to achieve scientific excellence, we produced a book titled ‘Biomedical Research: From Ideation to Publication’, which is aimed at masters students and above.  The book draws from our experiences in conducting national workshops for many years on topics related to ‘scientific research and communication’. The book spans the entire research process, from the conception of an idea, through its development, investigation and execution, and finally publication. ‘Biomedical Research: From Ideation to Publication’ is a multi-authored reference volume with contributors from around the globe.  It is edited by G. Jagadeesh, Sreekant Murthy, Y.K. Gupta and Amitabh Prakash; and published by Wolters Kluwer, Lippincott, and Williams & Wilkins. A detailed description, including Table of Contents, is in the attached brochure (PDF file). We released ‘Biomedical Research: From Ideation to Publication’ in India in December 2009 at the following events: 1.  American Association of Government College of Pharmacy (Bengaluru) Alumni (AAGCPA) sponsored ‘Excellence in Academic Research Award’ ceremony held in Bengaluru on 4 Dec. 2.  Indian Pharmacological Society meeting at Kolkata: During preconference workshop on ‘Research methods and Scientific writing’ on 9 Dec and on, the main conference- inaugural function on 10 Dec. 3.  Indian Pharmaceutical Congress meeting held at Ahmedabad on 12 and 13 Dec.  ‘Biomedical Research: From Ideation to Publication’ is modestly priced at Rs. 500 plus (after discounts). Please refer to page 2 of the brochure to place your orders. Your comments/suggestion s for its further improvement will be highly appreciated.  Thanks. Best regards,  G.
