Guest guest
Fenugreek seed - Semen Trigonellae Foeni-graeci - Hu Lu Ba - is an example of an herb that has both tonification and dispersal properties. I didn't want to leave the impression that herbs are either tonifying or dispersing in nature. Some herbs have properties of both. Hu Lu Ba's main function is to Tonify Yang. It's a Yang Tonic herb. Its energy is warm, and its taste is bitter. It targets the Kidney and Liver. S. Trigonellae Foeni-graeci warms the Kidney and disperses Interior Cold. This is a particularly good herb to use when the person has a long-term Yang Deficiency, is very Cold on the inside, and has an accumulation of Cold in the lower body. The scenario I'm talking about here goes beyond the usual Deficiency Cold which is the result of Yang Deficiency. This is a Yang Deficiency which has gone on for some time, both the Kidney and the Spleen are Yang Deficient, there's been insufficient Yang to move fluid in the body properly, and there's been an accumulation of Cold Damp Qi in the lower body as a result. Hu Lu Ba will tonify Yang in the Kidney at the same as it's dispersing the accumulated Damp Cold in the lower body. Hu Lu Ba also is used to treat hernias, abdominal and flank pain, and distention which comes from Cold. It's contraindicated in cases of Deficiency of Yin with Heat. (Wicke, vol. 2, p. 130) Semen Trigonellae Foeni-graeci also increases lactation. It's also been used to treat mountain sickness.
