Guest guest
In previous posts we learned that Qi is unstable and very close to the surface in the area of the body between the tips of the fingers and the elbows and between the tips of the toes and the knees. Exterior Pernicious Evils such as Cold, Dampness, and Wind frequently enter the body through points in these areas. But special points called Transporting or Shu Points in these areas can also affect changes for the better very quickly and very powerfully. There are 5 of these special points on each of the 12 main meridians that run through the hands and feet. For simplicity's sake these are called Well, Spring, Stream, River, and Sea points. In a previous post we looked at the Well points. These are the Shu points closest to the tip of the finger or toe. For example, Kidney 1, Bladder 67, Spleen 1, Stomach 45, Large Intestine 1, Lung 11, etc. The Well Point will always be the first or last point on a meridian. All the Well points share the characteristic that they're good points for mood. They frequently get used for irritability, mental restlessness, nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, and mental confusion. At the Well points the flow of Qi is the most superficial and the thinnest. The flow of Qi at these points is closest to the surface of the body and the most swallow. Think of water running in a sheet down a sidewalk. The Well points also are where the energy changes polarity from Yin to Yang or from Yang to Yin. The Classic of Difficulties says, used for " fullness under the heart. " The Spring points are the second closest points to the tips of the fingers or toes. Some examples of Spring points are Kidney 2, Bladder 66, Spleen 2, Stomach 44, Large Intestine 2, Lung 10, etc. The Spring Points frequently get used to clear Heat in both the channel (meridian) and the Organ. Thus Heart 8 can clear Heat in both the Heart meridian and the Heart organ system. The Class of Difficulties says used for " hot sensations of the body " . The Stream Points will be the 3rd closed point to the tips of the fingers or toes EXCEPT in the case of the Gall Bladder. The Stream point for the GB channel is GB 4. This is the one exception to the Stream point being the 3rd closest to the tips of the fingers or toes. Stream points are used for " feeling of heaviness and joint pain " according to the Classic of Difficulties. Stream points are used for treating Painful Obstruction Syndrome (arthritis/ rheumatism). They are especially good for Dampness though they also work very well on Wind. The Stream points on the Yang channels (i.e., Large Intestine, Small Intestine, Triple Heater, Stomach, Gall Bladder, and Bladder) are far better for this than the Stream points on the Yin meridians. The Yang channel Stream points can be used as local points (alleviates arthritis/ rheumatism pain in the fingers and toes) or as distal points to clear Pernicious Evils from the respective channel. Maciocia in The Foundations of of (p. 339) says that Stomach 43 can be used to clear Wind-Damp and Heat from the channels and that Small Intestine 3 can be used to remove obstructions from Dampness and Cold from the Small Intestine meridian. The Spiritual Axis in chapter 44 says Stream points are good when a " disease manifest intermittently (Maciocia, p. 340). In other words it comes and goes.
