Penel,

I agree. Having a good heart is universal, I think. We easily see that

the emotions are separate from the mind and will certainly mess up the

head at times. But to associate the actual organ is bizarre. Of course

with TCM when speaking of the Heart the heart isn't meant as such.

They're talking about a whole bundle else. Same with the Spleen, etc.

But sometimes I DO ask my fingers to carry on if I forget for a moment.

Good point. These things do happen.

One of the mechanisms by which the emotions affect the physical is through

disturbing Qi flow. Strong, unresolved, or sudden and overwhelming emotions

can disrupt the flow of Qi. A good example is the Kidneys and fear and

shock. In children and some adults this often can make Kidney Qi descend.

The result is that children and adults can wet their pants in fearful

situations. In children in abusive homes, the long-standing fear and

anxiety and resulting Kidney imbalance can result in bed-wetting. (This is

not the only possible cause of Kidney imbalance and bed-wetting. Some kids

are born with a tendency toward Kidney imbalance. Sometimes it's their

diet. For example, carrots tend to cause energy to descend, so if one has a

bed-wetter in the family, it's a good idea not to serve carrots for supper.

And definitely no carrot cake for a snack.<G> Save the carrots for lunch.)

Maciocia says that in adults long-standing fear and anxiety may not make

Kidney descend but rise in the form of Empty (Deficiency) Fire rising to the

head and creaing " dry mouth, malar flush, mental restlessness and insomnia. "

(Maciocia, p. 250) The prolonged fear and anxiety damage the Kidney Yin

over time. This leads to Deficiency Fire which rises. Fire tends to rise.

The term " malar flush " is one that Maciocia uses to describe the coloration

of the complexion in cases of Deficiency Heat. In cases of Excess Heat, the

entire complexion will tend to be red. It's uniform. In cases of

Deficiency Heat, the redness will tend to occur in blotches, especially on

the cheeks. This blotchy redness is a malar flush, and it's one of the

clues that it's a case of Empty Heat. (Empty is another way of saying

Deficiency. Full is another way of saying Excess. Some authors like

Maciocia prefer the Empty and Full translation instead of Deficiency and

Excess.)

In avicenna's view emotions were a prime influence on the physical heart.

Having courage is having a " big gall bladder " . Lack of courage is a " small

gall bladder. "

You're on the mark. I'll be posting more on Marrow, the Sea of Marrow,

special organs, etc.

Kidney and Heart Not Communicating, aka Kidney and Heart Not Harmonized, aka

Fire Insulting Water (putting it in Element terminology). Another Element

term for it is Water Not Flowing Upwards to Nourish and Cool Fire. There's a

special relationship between the Kidneys and the Heart. The " Water " of the

Kidneys need to ascend to cool the Heart, and the "

Fire " of the Heart needs to descend to warm the Kidneys. The person is

Kidney Yin Deficient ( " Water " is Kidney Yin). The Kidneys are the source of

Yin (and Yang for the entire body. " In the case of Kidney and Heart Not

Harmonized, the Yin Deficient Kidneys can't supply enough Yin to the Heart.

This causes Deficiency Fire in the Heart to blaze upward giving rise to

symptoms and signs like mental restlessness, insomnia characterized by

waking several times during the night, palpitations, a red tongue tip, etc.

Actually nervousness and agitation are symptoms in general of Yin Deficiency

anywhere in the body. When the Heart specifically is Yin Deficient, the

nervousness and agitation are even more pronounced and you also get the

sleep disturbance.

" Poor memory, dizziness, tinnitus and deafness are all due to deficiency of

Kidney-Yin failing to nourish the brain and open into the ear. " (Maciocia,

p. 260)

Maciocia gives the following 2 possible etiologies:

" 1) The same as for Kidney-Yin deficiency, with the additional component of

emotional problems such as anxiety, sadness and depression. Emotional

shocks and the ensuing sadness from break-up of relationships are a common

cause of Heart-Yin deficiency in this pattern.

" 2) This pattern can also develop from chronic Heart-Yin deficiency. "

(Maciocia, pp. 260-261)

Maciocia gives the prinicple of treatment as " nourish Kidney and Heart-Yin,

clear Heart Empty-Heat. " (p. 261)

He recommends the following points: Heart 7 (Spirit Gate - this one has been

discussed on here recently) to calm the Mind (Shen). Heart 5 to clear

Deficiency Heat and to conduct Heat downwards away from the head. (This

takes care of the " Heart Fire blazing upward " part.) Heart 6 to clear

Deficiency Heat and nourish Heart Yin and combined with Kidney 7 in order to

stop the night sweats. Yintang to calm the Shen. (I'm not sure but I believe

this is the Third Eye.) Gall Bladder 13 with Governing Vessel 24 to calm the

Shen. Kidney 3, Kidney 9, and Kidney 10 to tonify Kidney Yin. Maciocia

says that Kidney 9 also is good for calming the Shen. Conception Vessel 15

for calming the Shen and nourishing Heart Yin. Pericardium 6 for calming

the Shen. Conception Vessel 4 for nourishing Kidney Yin and Kidney Essence

and for conducting Heat downwards. Spleen 6 for tonifying Yin and calming

the Shen.

With all those points for calming Shen a person should be mellowed out.<G>
