Guest guest
Jing or Essence is a term you'll hear in TCM. It resides in the Kidneys but can be found all over the body. Jing, Shen, and Qi are referred to as the 3 Vital Treasures in TCM. The state of one will influence the state of the other two. Jing imbalances include but are not limited to hereditary conditions. There are 3 types of Jing - Pre-Heaven, Post-Heaven, and Kidney Jing. The Pre-Heaven Jing is the result of the sexual energies of the mother and father blending during intercourse. The concept of Pre-Heaven Jing includes but is not limited to the Western concept of heredity and inherited genetic disorders. It also includes a predisposition to things like Yang or Yin Deficiency, Qi Deficiency, etc. It's the base of the person constitution, strength, and vitality. There is a limited amount of Pre-Heaven Jing for a person to draw upon. When it's gone, that's it. Pre-Heaven Jing can be squandered through things like sexual excess, poor diet, intemperate living, etc. Even though the Pre-Heaven Jing cannot be increased, it can be positively influenced in a lot of cases, especially through breathing exercises and Qi Gong. Any time you see the term " Pre-Heaven " , it refers to before birth. The Pre-Heaven Jing is the only Jing present in the fetus. It is only after birth that the baby begins to develop Post-Heaven and Kidney Jing. The Post-Heaven Jing is that refined and extracted by the Stomach and Spleen after birth. It comes from the food eaten by the person. " Post-Heaven Jing " is a general term. It's not one specific Jing that the Stomach and Spleen extract from food, it's a collection of essences of various types that collectively are known as Post-Heaven Jing/ Essence. The Kidney Jing is a more specific Jing with specific roles in the body. It's made up of the Pre-Heaven and Post-Heaven Jing. If a person is starving or unwisely dieting, this is impacting the formation of Post-Heaven Jing in a negative way, and this in turn creates or worsens a Kidney Jing Deficiency. The Kidney Jing resides in the Kidney but flows throughout the body, especially in the 8 Extraordinary (or Strange) Channels/ Meridians. The two best-known of the 8 Strange Flows are the Governing Vessel (Yang) which runs up the middle of the back and the Conception Vessel (Yin) which runs up the middle of the front of the body. There are 6 other Strange Flows (Channels/ Meridians), but we haven't talked about them too much on here yet. Maciocia writes, " Kidney Essence determines growth, reproduction, development, sexual maturation, conception and pregnancy. " (Foundations, p. 39) Kidney Jing Deficiency has many of the same symptoms as Kidney Qi Deficiency but also can have some very severe symptoms having to do with growth, mental retardation, inability to conceive, etc. Victoria _______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
