Guest guest
In earlier posts we learned that Shen disturbance is one of the possible causes of insomnia. The Shen resides in the Heart, and if Heart Blood and/or Heart Yin is Deficient, Shen is " deprived of its residence " ; hence, the insomnia. Both Heart Blood Deficiency and Heart Yin Deficiency can be characterized by dream-disturbed sleep and excessive dreaming due to Shen being deprived of its residence. However the sleep pattern of the two imbalances is different. When Heart Blood is Deficient, the person will find it hard to fall asleep, but once asleep will continue to sleep. In the case of Heart Yin Deficiency, the person may find it hard to fall asleep (or may not), but will wake up frequently during the night. The Deficiency Heat wakes the person frequently. There are other differences between Blood Deficiency and Yin Deficiency. The complexion is dull pale in the case of Blood Deficiency, blotchy red in the case of Yin Deficiency. Blood Deficiency manifests as pale tongue, Yin Deficiency as a red tongue. It's not uncommon for a person with Heart Blood Deficiency also to be Heart Yin. In these cases the tongue color may appear more or less normal - sort of the average between pale and red. Forgetfullness also can characterize both Heart Blood and Heart Yin Deficiency. Dizziness is a possible symptom of Heart Blood Deficiency (Kidney Jing Deficiency isn't the only possible Root of dizziness), and agitation is associated with Yin Deficiency.
