Hello,

So many people over 60 develop brown spots on their skin, some flat others

raised and skin tags. What's the cause for these and how can acupuncture and

chinese herbs remove them and prevent more from developing?

Thanks for your answers. Shellie

These very often are due to Blood Stasis.

There is a section on brown spots in the book Aging & Blood Stasis: A New

TCM Approach to Geriatrics by Yan De-Xin, Blue Poppy Press, ISBN

0-936185-63-6.

" The brown spots on the skin of the face, hands, and upper back are called

lao nian ban or old age patches and shou ban, longevity patches.

Investigation confirms that the incidence of these brown patches on the skin

increases with age. Seventy-five percent of people aged 60-79 have them,

while 89% of those aged 80-90 have them. Moreover, if these brown patches

on the skin spread widely, then senility is severe. Thus we may see that

old age patches are universally accepted as a criterion for determining the

senility of the organism. At the same time, old peoples' skin also becomes

rough, inelastic, and pigmented darkly. TCM refers to this as scaly, dry

skin, and it is a typical symptom of static blood. " (p. 68)

You may also want to check for possible Liver imbalance in addition to Blood

Stasis. If they are coming from Blood Stasis or Liver imbalance, use herbs

to Invigorate the Blood and to correct the Liver imbalance. In addition, if

the skin is dry and scaly, Blood tonic herbs may be called for.

It's best to do a full TCM accessment on older people because their problems

often are complex.

I read where castor oil rubbed on these spots over a period of days will

take them off.
