Guest guest
This is not TCM, but the word needs to get out on this. Longterm, daily use of aspirin, Tylenol, and other NSAIDs (Non-Steroid, AntiInflammatory Drugs) - both OTC and prescription - can damage the kidneys. This is a particular problem in professional sports, and the article goes into some detail about problems in the NBA among basketball players. This warning does NOT apply to occasional use of aspirin and other NSAIDs - like having to take aspirin once in a while or even having to take it daily for a week or two. It refers to daily, week after week after week use of NSAIDs. There are alternatives to NSAIDs. I had a bad reaction to a prescription NSAID I took for bursitis in the hips. As it turned out in my case, castor oil packs on the hips not only made the pain go away, it did it without side effects and it did it better than the prescription NSAID. It also was longer-lasting than the NSAID. I had to take the NSAID daily; two straight days of using the castor oil packs overnight resulted in no pain for months. Castor oil packs (flannel soaked in warm castor oil and placed over the area with a heating pad on the pack) are anti-inflammatory. They also help improve lymph flow. They will not work on all cases of bursitis or inflammatory pain, but when they do work, they work surprisingly well. They are, however, messy. Pain is a symptom that something is wrong. The reason for the pain needs to be identified and corrected instead of merely covered up with pain relievers. Sometimes pain is protective in nature - like keeping someone off a sprained ankle until the sprain heals. If the person is one of those very rare people who do not feel pain, continuing to walk on the foot after the sprain can result in more serious and permanent damage being done. I hope this link works. The article is on Dr. Mercola's website.
