Guest guest
http://spanda.com/articles/infertility.html This is a very general, introductory article. Possible Roots of female infertility are various Kidney Deficiencies, Blood and/ or Qi Deficiency, and/or Liver Disharmonies. (There are some other things as well that can contribute.) I want to go into some detail about the section on Kidney Deficiences. Whenever Kidney Yin Deficiency is present, Kidney Yang Deficiency almost always will be present too (though less severe than the K Yin Deficiency). Likewise, whenever Kidney Yang Deficiency is present, Kidney Yin Deficiency almost always will be present too (though less severe than the K Yang Deficiency). In some cases the Kidney Yang Deficiency may be so severe and so much greater than the Kidney Yin Deficiency as to mask the symptoms of the Kidney Yin Deficiency. The Kidney Yin Deficiency can be so extreme and so much worse than the Kidney Yang Deficiency that it can mask the symptoms of the Kidney Yang Deficiency. Because both Kidney Yang and Kidney Yin Deficiency occur together (though not equal amounts), this is why Kidney Yang tonic formulas usually include at least one Kidney Yin tonic herb, and why Kidney Yin tonic formulas usually contain at least one Kidney Yang tonic herb. (Note: Yin cools and calms the body; Yang warms and activates the body.) So if both Kidney Yang and Kidney Yin Deficiency are present at the same time, why the different formulas? The reason is because one will predominate. Sometimes one Deficiency will be slightly less than the other. Sometimes one Deficiency will be much greater than the other - so great as to even mask symptoms of the other. The Nourish Essence Formula would be used if the Kidney Yin and Kidney Yang Deficiency problems are close to being equal in severity AND there also is Jing (Essence) Deficiency. The True Yin Formula is used if the Kidney Yin Deficiency is much more severe and noticable than the Kidney Yang Deficiency. The Sea of Qi Formula gets used if Kidney (and Spleen) Yang Deficiency are severe and noticeable. If a person has severe Kidney imbalance that has gone on for some time before treatment, different formulas may be called for as the clinical picture changes. For example, when I first saw the TCM herbalist, my most servere problem was Kidney Yang Deficiency. There were other problems as well, and the herbalist diagnosed and treated those as well, but the main problem was the Kidney Yang Deficiency. It was a real standout. More attention needed to be paid to the Kidney Yang Deficiency than to the other problems. As I gradually improved, other problems became more obvious and more pressing. (Note: Kidney Yang Deficiency can take a long time to treat.) Not only will Kidney Yang and Kidney Yin Deficiency differ in severity, the symptoms within each category will vary in intensity. Take for example the first set of symptoms listed under Nourish Essence Formula: " Chronic sinusitis, asthma, low back weakness, habitual miscarriage, frequent urination, clear leukorrhea and or chronic fatigue with weak pulse in the Kidney or Qi position. " This can be a person who is only mildly troubled. There are mild chronic sinus problems. The sinus problems are usually present but are not severe enough for the person to seek medical attention. The person feels bad all the time, but still has enough energy to work and attend to other things. The Kidney Yin, Yang, and Jing (Essence) Deficiencies are relatively mild. But, this also can be a person whose sinus problems are so severe that an operation is called for. This can be a person who is disabled, even bedridden. The Kidney Deficiencies are servere. (Note: Other factors also can result in sinus problems.) Some symptoms may be worse than others depending on factors like heredity, environment, other problems, etc. For example, the frequent urination may be a more severe and more pressing problem than the chronic sinus problems for one individual while the sinus problems may be more severe and pressing than the urination problems for another person. For students: The Nourish Essence Formuala is a variation of the classical formula Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia (Liu Wei Di Huang Wan). The original Sic-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia formula is for Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency. Other herbs have been added to address Yang and Jing Deficiency problems. (There are other formulas besides Nourish Essence which will address Essence Deficiency problems.) True Yin Formula is a variation of Restore the Left Kidney Pill (Zuo Gui Jia Er Zhi Wan). I couldn't find Sea of Qi Formula (Qi Hai Yao Fang) in any of my books. Perhaps someone else on the list has some info about what classical formula this is derived from. There are contraindications for most formulas, and these 3 are no exceptions. You do NOT want to use Sea of Qi Formula if there are not obvious signs and symptoms of Yang Deficiency. It can be too warming and too activating. It also should be used cautiously during pregnancy. Cooked rehmannia (Shu Di Huang, prepared Chinese Foxglove Root) can be a problem for anyone with a weakened Spleen.
