Guest guest
I have seen the five phase theory translated in two ways. They both seem to hinge on the Earth phase, but in different ways. One has the Earth phase set in the center, and the other phases around the outside, interacting with it. In the other, Earth has no more significance than the other elements, and is placed along the more familiar Creation and Control cycle. (Star within a circle diagram) At first this seemed unimportant, however the two different views utilize the phases in different ways. For instance, in the creation/control cycle, earth is considered the season of Late Summer. In the compass-style " tonification cycle " Earth is considered the end portion of all seasons. This starts to make a difference when you further subdivide. How I came across this dillema was trying to understand the difference between the ten stems and twelve branches, which basically are the two different theories of five phases divided into yin and yang aspects. The ten stems divide out into yin wood, yang wood, yin fire, yang fire, yin earth, yang earth, yin metal, yang metal, and yin water and yang water. However, because of the different view of the Earth phase, the twelve branches divide out with four earth phases, one for each season. Two yin earths (Wei and Chou) and two yang earths (Chen and Xu). This seems like an important split, so I am trying to distinguish between the significance and reality of the two different Five Phase theories. All I have been able to find was a reference that stated: " the former [the cross-style cycle] describes the macrocosm, and the latter [the circle/star cycle] describes functional relationships in the microcosm of the human person. " Can anyone help my understanding with this? Mbanu

They both >seem to hinge on the Earth phase, but in different ways. One has the >Earth phase set in the center, and the other phases around the >outside, interacting with it. I believe you're refering to the Feng Shui Ba Gua (8-sided figure) with earth in the middle. The 8 directions are northwest, north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, and west with earth in the middle. Each of the directions also corresponds to a trigram. A trigram is composed of 3 lines - some combination of broken and/or solid lines. Two trigrams together make one of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. >In the other, Earth has no more >significance than the other elements, and is placed along the more >familiar Creation and Control cycle. (Star within a circle diagram) Knowledge of this cycle is used to correct imbalances in houses as well as people. Say for example that Water is too strong and over-controlling Fire which is too weak. Tonify Wood which will strenghten Fire at the same time as it diminishes Water. The principle is the same if it's being used in compass school Feng Shui to balance out the energy of a house or in 5 Element TCM to balance out a person. >At first this seemed unimportant, however the two different views >utilize the phases in different ways. For instance, in the >creation/control cycle, earth is considered the season of Late >Summer. In the compass-style " tonification cycle " Earth is considered >the end portion of all seasons. This starts to make a >difference when you further subdivide. " Notice that the earth phase separates each of the other phase elements. This is because the qi represented by fire, metal, water, and wood returns to earth before transforming into another phase. " (The Complete Idiot's Guide to Feng Shui, 2nd. ed., Elizabeth Moran, Joseph Yu, and Val Biktashev, p. 269.) In compass school Feng Shui, the direction that a house sits and faces will make a difference in how different people will be affected by the house. For example, people who belong to the East Group (based on the year of birth and the gender) can become ill and face other problems if living in a West group home if proper corrections are not taken. Likewise for West Group people in an East Group home. (I'm simplifying the Feng Shui info a lot as sort of a crash course for readers interested in it.) I don't know how much there is to Feng Shui but the direction that a person sleeps and faces while awake can definitely make a difference in how well the person feels. This idea is not restricted just to the Chinese but also is found in the healing traditions of many North American Indian tribes. Sometimes moving the bed to where the headboard sits in a different direction can make a difference between a good night's sleep and one plagued by frequent wakings and bad dreams. Sometimes moving the direction that a desk faces can make the difference between being able to concentrate while also feeling mellow and energetic at work and feeling scattered and de-enegized. As weird as this sounds, it does happen. I invite readers to check it out for themselves. Try sitting in each of the major compass positions (east, south, west, and north) and see if you feel any different with your back to different dirrections. Some people won't feel anything, but some will. Then try experimenting with the 8 directions, also including NW, NE, SW, and SE. Very often healing is not a " magic bullet " but a lot of little things that add up over time. Guest guest
In fact there is not contradiction, when you see the diagram with earth in the center means tnat earth whic is site for adquired essence has to feed the others like earth which keep inside all the nutrients needed for life, that is one reason. During the year bettween every season there is transition in which there is not definition for about 18 days that why it is said that this period belong to earth too. The other diagrama is concerning the to cicles Shen and Ko isit is another to look at this . ten stems and 12 branches is a system older tnan five elements the arrangemente of yin an yang of every element explain the relationship of yin and Yang laws for example yin of water nurrish yin of wood and this one the fire yin this is the cicle Shen but Yin of water controls yang of fire and this one control yin of metal that is cicle Ko or ke. According to yin yang theory yin decrease when yang grow and viceversa yin and yang intertransform eachother So what you see is the integration of yin-yang theory with the stems and branches system. ===== Dr.L Rodríguez Neninger Ballet Tv Cuba telef 537-797255Especialista en Medicina Holistica(Acupuntura,Masaje,Dieta,Herbologia chinas) Domicilio:Telef 537-95-4446 lrneninger _____________ Messenger Nueva versión: Webcam, voz, y mucho más ¡Gratis!
