Lung water: swollen upper body; frequent, loose stools

" 'Fei shui' (Lung water) results from Lung qi failure to spread, contract

and descend, and thus inability to ensure the normal downward movement of

the fluid pathways, so that the body swells (especially the upper body); the

urine becomes difficult because fluids do not enter the Urinary Bladder but

instead pour into the counterpart of the Lungs, the Large Intestine, and the

stool becomes frequent and loose 'like that of a duck'. Many commentators

mention that this last symptom is a distinctive sign of edema from Lung

pathology. " (Fluid Physiology and Pathology in Traditional ,

Steven Clavey, p. 149.)

The normal direction of Lung Qi is downward. Sometimes the Kidneys may also

be involved in Lung water, as in the case of Kidneys Refusing to Receive Qi

(a form of Kidney Yang Deficiency). But, in cases where Kidney Yang

Deficiency is the main problem, there may be swelling of the lower body

instead of the upper body though there may be Lung congestion.

Both the Lungs and the Large Intestine are Metal Organs. The Lungs are Yin

Metal (a Zang Organ), and the Large Intestine is Yang Metal (a Fu Organ).

What the Lungs cannot handle effectively sometimes get sent to the Large

Intestine. In this case, excessive Fluids get shunted to the LI. In

addition, sometimes healers will take advantage of this Lung - Large

Intestine relationship to heal. A good example being the use of promoting

bowel movements, even purging, to remove Heat from the Lungs. (Not to be

done or to be done with extreme caution if there also is Qi Deficiency as

purging (sweating, promoting urination, etc.) can dissipate Qi.

Spleen Qi Deficiency also can cause loose bowel movements. The difference

being that the loose bowel movements of Lung water are more watery than

those of Spleen Qi Deficiency. Also, the edema of Lung water affects the

trunk of the body - especially the upper trunk - whereas Spleen water

primarily affects the arms and legs.

Note: Spleen Qi is supposed to rise, and Lung Qi is supposed to descend.
