Polygonatum: Yu Zhu or Huang Chin?

I'm interested in using Polygonatum in a formula. I've checked all

my reference materials, & two different herbs come up for

polygonatum: Yu Zhu (described as yellowish twisted roots), &

Huang Chin (tarry black round slices). I have some slight

familiarity with Huang Chin (very similar to prepared rehmannia,

but apparantly it's actions also include the stomach & lungs

more than does ti huang), but not for Yu Zhu, & I'm not sure

which one is called for. The actions and indications for the two

seem to overlap, and virtually all the sources that I've checked list

one but not the other.

Does anybody have any experiences with these ingredients?

Thanks,

Jeff

Polygonatum, to the best of my knowledge, is Yu Zhu, which is an

excellent Yin tonic. Huang Qin (huang chin?) is vastly different

from Yu Zhu, as well as from Shu di Huang (prep. rhemannia/tarry

round black slices). With many Chinese herbs, the latin is all over

the place from source to source, and it can be hard to differentiate

between herbs without training.
