Dear Mary,

Last month the LA Times reported an increase in hospital-acquired infections in

LA County. But county health officials refused to tell reporters or the public

where these infections occurred, citing confidentiality. Hospitals shouldn't be

allowed to keep this information secret!

One in 20 hospital patients will get an infection while being treated there for

something else. Nationally, 90,000 people die every year from these infections.

And hospital infections add about $5 billion dollars annually to our health care

costs.

It’s time to do something about this problem NOW! Ask the Assembly Health

Committee to support SB 739, by Senator Speier.

This bill will require hospitals to report about infections patients get while

being treated, so that you will be able to pick a hospital based on its

infection performance and hospitals will have a strong incentive to improve.

This bill has already passed the Senate and is now under consideration by a key

Assembly committee. Tell the committee members to vote FOR SB 739!

And please, tell your California friends and family about this great bill. We

want to see it move to final passage this legislative session, and legislators

need to know that Californians are watching!

Sincerely,

Lisa McGiffert
