Guest guest
My name is Shannon. I am a 33 year old mother and wife. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 3 years ago. At that time the Dr's RX'd Metformin. I took it for about a month and felt MISERABLE!!! The Dr's switched me to a time released form of the pill, and it still made me very ill. Not to mention it made me CRAVE dairy products. (Which I normally do not consume.) I never really understood why they gave me the Metformin, seeing how I have almost always had normal blood sugar levels. I take Magnesium and cinnamon and that keeps my blood sugar in the normal ranges. I took the Metformin for about a month, tried the time release, and decided It really wasn't for me. I also had a uterine fibroid at the time. They wanted to give me a myomectomy (surgical removal of the fibroid) I refused and took Shiitake Mushroom supplements. Needless to say the fibroid is 100% GONE as of July 22nd 2005. There was not a single trace of it left. The fibroid was the size of a small grapefruit.(Last year it was the size of a penny.) The reason I am writing is, I know better than to take Dr RX without researching their medications 1st, and finding a natural cure or solution. But I have a situation that has made me reconsider. On July 14th I had a miscarriage. The Dr's are telling me I need to go back on the MEtformin, and that it will prevent 1st trimester miscarriage. My husband and I are trying to have another baby. My infertility was the result of a tubal ligation 11 years ago. Last March I went to Mexico and had my tubes reversed. Upon my return from surgery in Mexico, I had a hystosonogram. They confirmed my left tube was wide open, free of scar tissue and very healthy. My uterus free of fibroids, and everything functioning as it should. The Dr's are telling me Metformin will help prevent 1st trimester miscarriage, and that being insulin resistant I need to take this medication, they also say it helps prevent gestational diabetes. Is there another way? I thought metformin was black labled and not even RX'd in some parts of the world. Is there any research showing the effects of MEtformin on unborn children? I can't seem to find any contrasting information on metformin. I have read many articles about woman who have taken it to conceive, and they seem to have a high success rate. But at what cost? Any information would be wonderful. I am suppose to start the metformin today. Why would they RX it when I have normal blood sugar reading, and have for the past 3 years? I am ovulating on schedule. and everything seems to be normal as far as my health is concerned. Thank you for your input. ~Shannon~

There is an article on our alternative medicine message boards to that effect! There is help, and it is achieved mainly thru diet and lifestyle. We have family members who have managed without the drugs so I do know it can be done although it necessitates close monitoring of diet along with aggressive supplementation as well. Here in the U S we have more problems with blood sugar and this is primarily due to the availability and prevalence of sugar coated snacks. We must set our priorities high, if we wish to establish stable blood sugar control. Refined sugar, pasteurized honey and pasteurized orange juice are all just as problematic because of the way they are processed. Table sugar is made with harmful bleaches and to top it all off it is also a GMO, so it is in our best interests to avoid forms of processed sugars. Orthodox medicine still recommends that all diabetics continue to eat refined sugar...this course of action will ensure a continuous flow of diabetic patients. There are other more healthy sweeteners available. Stevia, in my opinion is the most viable alternative to table sugar. It is regulated as a *dietary supplement* (thanks to Monsanto, makers of Aspartame) which really leaves a lot of people in the dark regarding its use as a healthy sweetener! We use stevia (one packet is all you need) to sweeten oatmeal or add a banana or a handful of raisins to the mix which can be served with freshly prepared powdered goat milk (www.meyenberg.com). For stevia, NOW foods offers a choice of several good varieties to use. www.NOWfoods.com Essential fatty acids are beneficial, along with extra virgin olive oil and Udo's oils. www.udoerasmus.com In our family, neuropathy problems surfaced immediately after starting the deadly diabetic medications. (You can read the label, it LISTS it right there as a common side effect!) The primary contraindication is likely to be " arterial blockages " leading up to HEART ATTACK (myocardial infarction). I am convinced that the use of these drugs led up to Neuropathy,... since getting off the medications (glyburide and metformin) there hasn't been one solitary problem in these areas! Before I list the supplements for you, I would like to indicate that the pain was so severe that there were visits to the ER and initally taking maximum dosages of Vicodin, which if you're aware, is one of the strongest pain medications available out there and the liver became so toxic from vicodin (which is really strong acetaminophen) that we had to supplement generously with milk thistle in order to protect the liver and reverse liver damage. Diabetes supplements: here are many excellent brands available. Bitter Melon Fenugreek GTFChromium (two or three times daily) B-complex Potassium Magnesium (600 mgs in divided doses) Gymnema Sylvestre Alpha lipoic acid For diabetic regimen, it is especially beneficial to include more cruciferous vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and organic whole grains such as high fiber oatmeal. Any meat/dairy should be all organic or free range and free of hormones and antibiotics, although we find that dairy worsens symptoms more than any other saturated fats. The vegetables should be lightly simmered as in soups, stews.etc, Also best to eliminate all overly ripened, overly sweet fruits... carrot, grapes and bananas are extremely high in sugar content. Pink grapefruit and granny smith apples are among the least problematic. Also include more fiber, preferably as dried beans, legumes and lentils, oats, oat and rice bran, walnuts and raw nuts are very helpful as they are high in natural chromium which help to control sugar levels. God Bless! JoAnn P.S. Aspartame in ANY form is linked to Diabetic Neuropathy, high sugar levels, whether it be Equal or Nutrasweet, Diet pop or even food containing aspartame! The Methanol in Aspartame actually worsens diabetes and really causes weight gain and furthermore leads to dysfunctional glucose metabolism! I could just go on forever with this topic. I've tried to include some of the basics and I would encourage you not to take any blood sugar lowering medications. They usually just cause hypoglycemia and I would think that would be dangerous in pregnancy. Then again, they also interfere with circulation and are linked to heart attacks, although they neglect to mention why! I can only imagine! _________________ JoAnn Guest mrsjoguest DietaryTipsForHBP www.geocities.com/mrsjoguest/Genes

There are other things to consider in pregnancy as well and because of all the harmful additives in our commercial food supply, there should be some dietary modifications in diabetes to compensate for the lack of consideration the food monopolies have for our health. This lack becomes even more important in pregnancy mainly because of the prevalance of hormones and antibiotics and this is true sometimes even as we attempt to eat primarily organic foods. Although I am aware that everyone promotes milk as a major source of calcium, actually you can get more calcium from dark greens such as spinach and really in plant form it is has the added advantage of giving us an abundance of magnesium and other mineral components that your body needs to assimilate it properly. I would recommend the addition of plain organic yogurt in smoothies or mixed with fresh organic fruits on a daily basis. Organic yogurt because it is fermented tends to build up our immune system and in that way assists in the digestive processes and this includes the rebuilding of our pancreas and the way it uses even natural fruit sugars and so on and so forth. Synthetic estrogen which emanates from our meat and dairy supply especially are really not beneficial for the fetus and may even be harmful, in fact from my research they prove to be very harmful in that they tend to take up the estrogen receptors and unlike the natural hormones keep on circulating throughout our bodies replacing the natural estrogens which our body makes. I do know that these artificial estrogens interfere with sperm count and conception. And since insulin is a major ¡§hormone¡¨, in diabetes we have to be careful of the ¡§synthetic¡¨ hormonal drugs that permeate our food supply and we know that they are most prevalent in animal fluids and proteins. For this reason at this time, they should all be excluded keeping your dietary choices as ¡§pure¡¨ as possible. Essentially drinking only pure water and the purity of your foods should be your primary goal always and especially when you have the added responsibility of maintaining a good quality of life for your unborn child. The fetus is much more sensitive to these things than we are, and things that we have become accustomed to may have a very negative impact on the fetus along the way. In my opinion drugs should not be taken during the course of pregnancy for obvious reasons. In fact really nothing unnatural should enter your body during pregancy. That said, I realize that it is not easy to follow through with such a recommendation in this day and age however we know that only natural organic foods will help baby to thrive as it should. You may think that the doctor has your best interests in mind when he advises reverting back to the diabetic drugs. I think you are being deceived. Even though we are under their ¡§care¡¨, we don¡¦t have to take everything they advise. This I know from prior experience. Although they will try to put on the pressure ( and they certainly do), in the final analysis they have to honor your wishes. If you don¡¦t feel comfortable with his recommendations, follow your heart. Every woman is endowed with special wisdom for this important time. That baby is very much alive, even though he is just a little mite. He is trying to tell you something. Go with your own intuition and don¡¦t let any outside influences. Use your own discretion. Mother knows best!! ƒº Hugs JoAnn _________________ JoAnn Guest mrsjoguest DietaryTipsForHBP www.geocities.com/mrsjoguest/Genes
