Guest guest
I made it safe out of New Orleans. I lived in a parking garage on Convention Blvd from Tuesday thru Sunday, after leaving my apartment after the skylight blew out, then I ran out of water. No food or water from " rescue " people until Friday. Looting kept me alive. Once we were in the evacuation area, we were not permitted to leave. Hard to argue with trigger happy cops from Gretna on the bridge or with Blackhawk mercs with automatic weapons. I brought about 30 pounds of supplements with me. Vitamins and supplements kept my energy levels high and my moods balanced all throughout the ordeal. Lots of very nice warm sharing folk (my fellow disaster victims) surrounded me. 3 blocks away at the convention center, there was more violence. We nurtured one another. I clearly noted that those around me who binged on pillaged junk food & /or chain smoked cigarettes suffered big-time energy loss, got depressed, and had problems with tempers as the days wore on. When the army arrived, they fed us with MRE meals. Very tasty, but for me (a diabetic) they had far far too many carbs. One meal had more carbs than I normally eat in a week. But because I maintain my blood glucose levels thru supplements, I was able to cope with the MRE meals, as well as the " food stops " the bus took at junk-food places. At no time did my fasting blood sugar exceed 166. Normally I keep it under 120. My 1, 2 and 4 week averages are around 130, which is not too bad, all things considered. I am safe in Austin staying with friends. My friend Phoenix loaned me a laptop & hooked me into his network so I have Internet access. For those interested, my blog at LiveJournal can be accessed here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/alobar/ Live Journal lists posts in reverse chronological order, so older posts are at the bottom. My ex-wife, Raven, posted to my LJ while I was trapped in New Orleans, then I took over when I arrived in Austin on Monday. Below is a post from the C3 list about help for hurricane victims. For specific info on donating to this grass roots effort, contact Ward at wardpeace . Tell Ward that Alobar sent you his way. I have been in southeast Louisian the last couple of days, and it is completely chaotic, as all can imagine...Veterans For Peace has set up an effective pipeline and grass-roots relief effort between Folsom and Covington, La....we have gotten over 200 relief packages that have been mailed to my house in Baton Rouge, which are then being sent directly to the our inventory and distribution team. Several of our team members are driving out in every direction from the camp and we have started mapping locations that are in dire need of help, where nobody has even tried to bring any relief to. THANKS to the people from all over the country, and several foreign countries, that are sending much needed relief items. The Red Cross is helping a few in Covington, but there are masses of food that is just sitting there. They are throwing away large quantities of food that are not being consumed, while people that really need help are getting nothing. Food Not Bombs has set up in our camp, and Woody Powell of VFP has flown in to help organize computer records to keep track of the MANY packages and to keep a running inventory record. VVAW member Billy Kelley is here in the field, as are the VFP Impeachment bus team, along with Iraq Veterans Against the War member Michael Cuzzort of New Orleans. We have about 30 other civilian volunteers set up in our camp. Andrea Garland and her husband Jeffrey of " Get Your Act On " has left camp to try to get to Algiers in their donated van. A used car dealer in Austin(Don's Auto Sales) heard that they were going to use the van they were going to buy, to use to run supplies, and he GAVE them the van for free...just one of many incredible stories of kindness and benevolence that I will share when I have time. Kathy Kelly of Voices In the Wilderness told me that the Pastors For Peace bus is headed our way to help. More later, back to work...
