Firstly: Do not take offense if you or anyone you know is currently

sleeping with your dog. Don't get me wrong, I like dogs and all animals

but I would never sleep with an elephant or a cobra for that matter. I

know they are pets but what is your opinion about your pit bull sleeping

on your bed with you?????????? [:-/]

I have two Standard Schnauzers, the male sleeps in the living room

and the female likes to sleep with us in the bedroom.

Sometimes she's on the floor, but lots of times she's on the foot of

the bed (my side of course :), she's always welcome. We use a

special bedspread to protect the blankets and sheets as both dogs may

visit us on the bed during the day.

If I had a Pitbull, it would be sweet and welcome! No particular

breed ban here!

Uh, not a big deal? Not any more threatening then sharing my bed with the

killer ankle-biter chihuahua next door.

I think it's delightful! :-) My dogs cuddle with me in bed. Two head

for the floor for the night because that's where they prefer; one

stays. The one who stays is a lab/shepherd/something mix - a big guy.

The other two also are mixes - sheltie/shepherd and

husky/wolf-looking/whatever!

Everyone has different preferences, icky-factor, whatever. I adore

animals, and, for me, there's nothing like a warm, cuddly dog snuggled

up by me!

If it's the pit bull factor, I don't agree with that. I know they are

getting a really bad rap, but they are dogs like any other. I fostered

one who was the sweetest, gentlest thing, and I know people who have

them as pets who say the same. Like humans, there are bsad dogs and

good dogs. Depends on lot on how they were raised and treated.

I think that it comes down to personal preference in most cases.

Some people view their dogs as part of their family, other people

don't. Some people won't even have them in the house, much less

consider sleeping with the dog on the bed. We have had dogs on our

beds for nearly 20 years, and we're all fine. Our dogs don't have

fleas, however, and I imagine that would be pretty nasty sharing the

bed with doggie parasites.

LOL!! What a coincidence! We also have 2 Standard Schnauzers, the

male sleeps in the living room, the female sleeps on the bed (she's

boss dog, and won't allow him on the bed).

We were watching Dog Whisperer the other day and he

stated that small dogs are actually more agressive

than large dogs. I would tend to agree with that

statement. Large dogs are trained or forced to be

mean. My partner had a pit bull that was very sweet

and good natured.

Hi Andrea,

Having two SSs is a nice coincidence! Our female will let the male

on the bed if he wants, he just prefers not to sleep there.

Dogs in my household have always been treated as part of the family.

I think having pets around is very beneficial to ones mental and

emotional well-being. They're very sensitive to your feelings, if

you've ever lost a dog, the remaining dog will grieve with you and

comfort you. Of course you have to like animals to begin with, or

you'll just be stressed having them around.

Thanks for all the answers/comments made for my

question on Sleeping with your dog???. I noticed some

of you mentioned parasites and fleas. That's the

reason I was asking about sleeping with them. I know

dogs carry tape worms, fleas, ticks and stuff that I

might not be aware of that might get in your ear or

other areas of your body. I know that this sounds

nonsense to you but its a legitimate concern. I was

raised in a ranch/farm and we had all sorts of animals

but they were always outside. I know some of you are

saying its the way you interpret it. I know of many

homes where the dogs sleep with owners but I just

wanted to hear from those of you who are in the

forefront of this question. Is there anyone else out

there who sees/intreprets this question

differently????? Thanks again. AL.

If your dog takes a monthly heartworm meds, he or she will not get fleas, if he

takes the right kind. Most monthly heartworm meds take care of any worms, except

for tapes. To get a tape worm, you have to eat and swallow a flea. I raise

yorkies and I handle all kinds of feces and have never gotten any worms.

Ok I have to chime in. My son woke up with a tick on his face THIS morning.YUCK!

One of our beagles sleep with him. The other sleeps with my daughter. This is a

concern for me as Lyme disease is very prevelant in my area. The dogs will

continue to sleep with the kids but I will have to check them thouroughly before

bed from now on.

Ahhh, *now* it's a different question! So, the concern is catching

something from sleeping with your dog, and it doesn't matter what kind

of dog it is or, heck, even if it was a cat or ... an elephant. :-)

No, I wouldn't want to catch anything from anyone, dog or human! I

don't think there are a lot of diseases that transfer from a dog to a

human. Ringworm is one. Fleas generally will stay on a dog if it has

one, but may bite a human.

That said, I keep my dogs healthy so I don't have to worry about it. I

also don't want them to be suffering from flea bites or worms or

whatever. Fed a natural, raw diet, they stay free of fleas and other

nasties.

That help?

Cindy
