I have a 9 year old son, who was recently diagnosed with Aspergers

Syndrome. I'd love any feedback from anyone who has worked with anyone with

Aspergers Syndrome before.

Our Psychologist recommened giving him Fish Oil caspsules. Does anyone know

a good place to get fish oil capsules that are on the smaller side rather

than a larger capsule?

Thank you in advace.

Hi Mary,

My daughter had a case of PANDAS (OCD caused by a strep infection)

and her doctor recommended fish oil as well. You can buy fish oil in

a liquid form (the one we use has a lemony flavour), and I just mix

the fish oil with some thick juice in a little cup, and I called it

her Omega 3 vitamin. You can also find Omega 3 in chewable tablet

form I believe. My daughter didn't like this though. Hope this

helps a bit.

Take care, Marianne

Our son, now 15, has aspergers as well. Food allergies affect him

tremendously, and when he was younger, and he kept himself everything

he was allergic to, he had very little trouble coping with life. As

he's gotten older, a lot of the allergies have subsided, as long as

he doesn't eat the offending foods every day. Fish oil or flax oil

he almost always takes, still, and that helps as well.

Good luck to you!

The line of kids' products is great. There's actually a chewable gel-

filled capsule, and liquid form, as well. They taste like

strawberries, too, so no fishy taste. I got mine at Whole Foods, but

there's a link on this site to find a store near you.

Dear Mary,

Welcome here, and your son is lucky that you are

here to research natural support for him!

This topic is dear to my heart, since my own son has

personality traits that are a lot like Aspergers.

He was officially diagnosed with ADD, on the same

spectrum. I was not too impressed with the process,

but that is another story.

Can you tell us about his general health?

Many people on the autism/add spectrum have

severe digestive issues.

So-called " leaky gut " can be the root cause behind

allergies, problems of absorption, and heavy metal

toxicity. The problems all go together and reinforce

one another in a vicious cycle.

The beauty of natural health measures is that we

can reverse that process. We don't treat disease, we

build health. Big difference! We try to turn those

vicious cycles of disease around till we have an

upward spiral of growing health.

Here is a thought to start with: think of autism and

ADHD as filter disorders.

Mentally and emotionally the person is overwhelmed

by everything coming at him, and just can't process it.

A typical ADDer finds it hard to distinguish foreground

from background.

Inside the body, the filters don't work well either:

leaky gut is a huge issue.

How much do you know about the gut connection?

Have you done the GFCF diet? If you have not, it

stands for Casein-free Gluten-free.

That means no milk, no wheat.

Supporting the digestive system, investigating

allergies, and treating leaky gut issues are a great

place to start.

All these measures are in the way of building health.

So if they don't help, they won't do harm. That is

more than we can say about psychiatric drugs.

In the files of the group you will find a series of

articles called " Coping with ADD " . Anything in there

goes for Aspergers too.

Start there, OK?

Carlson's makes a liquid fish oil that is orange or lemon flavored. It is

actually pretty flavorless and not one bit fishy. It may be an easier choice for

you to give to your son. They sell it in pretty much any health food

store/vitamin store.

Thank you all for your responses. I found a store near me that carries the

omega 3 chewables for children. I'll be picking them up tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Thank you for your response. Joey has always had good health and no

allergies that we know of. He has had all the routine vaccinations

and is on the average size for height and weight. He was a very large

baby, he was 10lbs 6oz when he was born, and no problems with his

birth or during pregnancy.

Joe eats tons of veggies, when we go out to eat he orders the Salad

bar instead of a burger and fries. We live in an Italian house so

pasta is always on the menu. I did take him off milk products and

reduced his pasta intake, candy/sweets and no soda to see if it made a

difference. I didn't notice any differences in his behavior. He

drinks soda occassionally, his diet consits of fresh fruits and

veggies, we eat pasta once or twice a week. All my kids will go for

fresh fruit before sweets anyday.

I can start a food diary and see how his behavior is based on the

foods he eats as well.

Thank you

Mary

From what I've seen, fish oil/Omega 3's are extremely important and can help a

host of issues. Helps eliminate toxins, lower blood

pressure, reduce triglycerides, lower heart attack & stroke risk,

possibly reduces risk of cancer, helps with: arthritis - blood

circulation - anxiety - depression - aggression - ADD/ADHD - immune

system - learning - children's behavior problems. See more here:

My youngest son, now 25, has Aspergers and it took me 11 years to get him

correctly diagnosed. We had behavioural issues with him as well so right

through his teen years it was a nightmare journey. He has done extremely

well for himself of recent years and has got himself back on track and is

now working full time in a Government Dep't job and loving it! He did this

all by himself without any assistance from me and I believe from what he

told me he began to eliminate various foods from his diet. I am very proud

of him!

Cheers

Has your son been given vaccines? You may want to consider finding a

holistic health care practitioner to test for mercury and do a heavy

metal detox. Aspergers (Mild Autism) is greatly associated with

vaccine damage.

Mary,

My son also has Aspergers Syndrome. I have tried all sorts of things

that have helped with varying degrees of success. I have how ever

had great success with counselling. It took me quite a while to find

one who connected with my son but has been very helpful to all of

us. I do not know where you are located. However, there is a

wonderful school,Summit Academy, they have campuses throughtout the

USA and they have all sorts of programs available to the community.

You might want to see if they have one in your area.

Good luck!

Vaccines are a major cause of Autism. My son has vaccine induced Aspergers

Syndrome, he was not born with it, he was a beautiful normal blue-eyed

bright as a button baby with a sparkle in his eye UNTIL he had vaccines!

One minute I had a beautiful NORMAL child of 2yrs old, a child who got up

and walked at 9 mos of age, spoke in sentences at 15 mos of age and at 2 1/2

yrs of age was a " zombie " , that beautiful bright bubbly child with the

twinkle in his eye had gone forever. The lights had gone out and the smile

vanished to be replaced with a face incapable of " expression " .

Today at 25 he is leading a normal life and has a great job but he still

lacks the facial expression and the social skills of one with Aspergers

Syndrome. I would never have had him vaccinated with all those toxic

chemicals if I'd known the dangers of them.

Hi Lyndall,

What did you do for your son to change all that

or did he just grow out of it?

It would be helpful if you could find a practitioner to run blood

screenings for metals, food sensitivities, mineral levels - it many

cases knowing this information and supplementing it according to the

results provides a great support system for the body. Chiropractors

and other alternative doctors may do this. There is an institute in

Illinois, called the Pfeiffer Institute that does all this, although

they are expensive. I was able to find a chiropractor to do this for

me at a lesser cost.

Are you working with developmental therapists? If not, I would suggest

getting him evaluated with an occupational, speech and/or developmental

therapist - if you can find someone in your area who is certified in

the DIR Floortime method -- you will find this type of therapy

extremely beneficial, it is best to begin immediately in order to help

the brain/body to regulate.

I wish you the best - and do not focus on the label, focus on your

child and individual issues that need addressing.

Hugs,

Marie

I have a 19 yr old son with Aspergers Syndrome. I work

with him using both Theta and Quantum Biofeedback with

excellent results. He does exceptionally well when we

add Essential Fatty Acids and Minerals to his diet.

Fish oil is a fatty acid, but not the best and isn't

the most complete. The most complete Fatty Acid

supplement available is at

http://theqxci.com/store/index.php?act=viewProd & productId=145.

It contains all 88 fatty acid chains.

Gluten free diets are also known to help.

Avoid situations where he will be over stressed and

over stimulated. Give him a place to retreat when he

needs to withdrawl. EFT is known to help. They respond

very well to consistant routines. The less chaotic the

environment, the better he will feel.

The supplement out of the UK " Sekebal " is also known

to help. http://www.sekebal.com/ This is one I have

used with my son energetically as it's available on my

matrix of therapies.

3 excellent books to read are:

The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children by Doreen

Virture

Aspergers Syndrome, A guide for parents and

professionals by Tony Attwood

When Love Is Not Enough, A guide to Praneting Children

with RAD-Reactive Attachment Disorder by Nancy L

Thomas

Tony Attwood is reknown for his practice working with

AS clients. http://www.tonyattwood.com.au/

There are also some good groups on for

support.

Thank you for your reply.. I have found several doctors in my area who

specialize in Asperges and Autism. I'll be making an appointment with

them. I've also applied for an access card (pennsylvania) for

additional medical assistance, wrap around service and an aide for

school.

Thank you .
