Deromedi Chief Executive Officer Kraft Foods Inc. Three Lakes Drive Northfield, IL 60093 Dear Roger Deromedi: Your 2004 Annual Report to your stockholders is titled " Helping People Around the World Eat and Live Better. " However, your Annual Report never mentions the global controversy over genetically engineered foods, also known as foods containing GMOs (genetically modified organisms). You discuss the seven strategies of your " Sustainable Growth Plan " in your annual report. Strategy seven is to " Act Responsibly " and you state " Kraft continues to take part in the broader societal response to issues relevant to our business, including growing health and wellness concerns. " If you are sincere in wanting to " Act Responsibly " you should remove unlabeled genetically engineered food ingredients from the products you sell in the United States and Canada as you have done in the products you sell in the European Union (EU) countries. Your annual report states that Brazil, Russia and China are countries you are targeting for increased growth of the Kraft products. These countries all require the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods. Do you plan on using non-GMO ingredients in the foods you sell in these countries as you have done in the EU? Or will you label them as containing GMOs? There is a growing body of scientific research indicating that genetically engineered foods could cause allergic reactions and many other health problems in humans. Yet you continue to let your U.S. and Canadian customers serve as guinea pigs in this unprecedented feeding experiment. I encourage you to watch the documentary film, The Future of Food, to better understand why consumers, farmers and scientists are concerned about the potential health and environmental damage that could come from genetically engineered foods. To learn more about this film, visit their web site at www.thefutureoffood.com. Your annual report also speaks enthusiastically about the Back to Nature natural and organic products and how you added 34 new products to this line in nine months. Are you aware that genetically engineered crops are cross-pollinating with organic crops threatening the future purity of organic crops in the United States? If you want to " Act Responsibly " Kraft should express your concern about the contamination of organic crops from genetically engineered crops to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Please be aware that under current U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, biotech companies are not even required to notify the FDA they are bringing a new product to market. The FDA has essentially told the biotech industry to regulate itself. This is not the kind of oversight that will protect the health of the American public. A poll released in 2004 that was funded by the USDA and conducted by Rutgers University found that 89 percent of the American public wants the federal government to require mandatory labeling on genetically modified foods. Only 10 percent felt labeling should not be required and 1 percent were unsure. In the United States, the FDA says companies have the option of voluntarily labeling their products. Kraft has apparently chosen to neither voluntarily label your products that contain genetically engineered ingredients nor remove genetically engineered ingredients from your products. As a concerned consumer, I am asking Kraft to do one of the following: 1. Stop using genetically engineered ingredients in all of your products unless adequate testing, labeling, and liability regulations are established. 2. If you are going to use genetically engineered ingredients, label them so that consumers can make their own choices on whether or not they want to eat them. Please write me back and tell me if Kraft intends to take either of these steps or whether I will need to start boycotting the Kraft products. Thank you! Sincerely, Your name here Your address here --------------------
