Guest guest
I called my representative just now and was told mine was the first call on this issue and it might be handled today or the next few days. So please call now to protect our freedoms. USA PATRIOT Act Reauthorization: ASAP! Call Your Representative - This week, Congressional negotiators will begin the final phase of reauthorizing, or renewing, important parts of the USA PATRIOT Act. At risk are the important checks and balances in the Senate version of the bill that are not in the version of the bill approved by the House.Your calls to your Representative tonight and tomorrow are urgently needed. The differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill will be ironed out in the “conference committee†composed of House and Senate members. For weeks, the House leadership has delayed naming conferees to the conference committee on the USA PATRIOT Act reauthorization bill in an effort to build support for the House version of the bill. In a completely unexpected about-face, on Monday, November 7, these same House leaders have signaled that they will name the House conferees tomorrow, Wednesday, November 9, 2005. At that time and that time only, the House can issue non-binding instructions to the House conferees about the legislation. A bi-partisan group of legislators is planning to introduce such instructions tomorrow. When House conferees are named, a motion will be offered to " instruct " them to adopt provisions limiting the USA PATRIOT Act's more intrusive powers. The exact wording of the motion is not settled, but it is a critically important opportunity for House members to reflect continuing public unease with the unrestrained government powers of the USA PATRIOT Act. Take Action Now Your call to your representative today/tonight will make a difference! Although the time frame is short, it is vitally important that every member of the House of Representative receives calls, even during the evening hours and into the opening of business tomorrow. Ask for the staffer who handles Judiciary Committee issues. Tell the staffer that you are calling about the conference committee on the USA PATRIOT Act Reauthorization bill (H.R. 3199). Here’s the message: 1. VOTE YES on the motion to instruct conferees. 2. Urge House conferees to support the Senate reforms of USA PATRIOT Act powers and to support sunsets, not expansions, of the national security letter provisions. _Click here to find your representative’s phone number_ (http://capwiz.com/fconl/callalert/index.tt?alertid=8221561 & type=CO) .
