HUMAN RIGHTS ~

URGENT!! Tell Congress to Get Its Priorities Straight

During Thanksgiving recess - CALL their local offices!!

Tell Congress:

-You have given yourself $31,600 in pay raises since 1997, the last time you

raised the minimum wage.

-Minimum wage jobs pay just $10,700 per year.

-A majority of Congress has blocked an increase in the minimum wage.

-Support an immediate and significant increase in the minimum wage instead of

giving yourself another pay raise.

You can find the local office numbers for your U.S. representative

at http://www.house.gov and for your senators at http://www.senate.gov.

Protect Free Speech and Workers' Rights on Campus - A serious injustice is

occurring at the University of Miami.

Please pass this on to anyone you know in Miami--whether or not they live in a

TOXIC TOYS

Recent testing shows that some children's products contain phthalates - a class

of chemicals linked with a range of harmful health effects - despite having

labels that claim they are " phthalate-free. "

Tell the Federal Trade Commission to make sure parents and consumers know the

truth about toxic chemicals in children's products.

You can help STOP HOSPITAL INFECTIONS in your area by demanding information

about your local hospital's infection rates and prevention practices. Your local

hospital must answer to you -- the local community. With direct local pressure

from you, hospitals will no longer be able to

hide their problems behind a smoke screen of excuses.

The EPA is accepting public comment on its " Toxics Release Inventory Burden

Reduction Proposed Rule. " The proposed changes would deny the public access to

important information on local toxic releases and would make it more difficult

for communities, environmental groups, and federal, state, and local governments

to protect public health and the environment.

IRAQ: Bring Our Children Home

Our soldiers are fighting everyday in Iraq, but instead of engaging in a

legitimate debate on the merits of our current course in Iraq, George Bush and

Dick Cheney do what they always do and attempt to smear their opponents.

1) Call the White House and let them know you are tired of political attacks and

want real solutions for Iraq. You can reach the White House by dialing:

202-456-1111.

Please take a moment right now to call your representatives in Congress and

demand that they too call for the immediate end to this war. The toll-free

number for the Capitol Switchboard is 1-800-426-8073.

2) Join me and tell George Bush: You can no longer mislead Congress and the

American people. It's time for an Iraq success strategy that will bring our

troops home. Join me by visiting:

lawyers, nuns, monks and farmers, are serving long prison sentences for acts of

Housing: Take Action Now to Alert Your Local Media!

On October 26, H.R. 1461 passed the House of Representatives. While the bill

would establish HOUSING TRUST FUND from profits of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac,

it includes serious threats to the democratic process and the fundamental rights

of people with low incomes and the advocacy organizations that serve them.

We expect that the Senate will consider its version of the bill in the next few

months. We need your help to alert the media and let the public and Congress

know that the House version of the bill is unacceptable, and that the Senate

must reject such anti-democracy provisions should it consider an Affordable

Housing Fund.

YOU CAN HELP! Send a letter to the editor of your local media today by using our

online action center. You can email the letter or print it out and send it. Be

sure to include your own examples of how the bill would affect your organization

or low income voters in your area:

ENVIRONMENT ~

BY NOV. 28 if possible, BUT NO LATER THAN DEC. 8!!!

You have a great opportunity to help stop global warming by urging Canada's

prime minister to push for strong curbs on greenhouse gases when he hosts an

international climate change meeting.

http://news.panda.org/cgi-bin1/flo/y/ejh70FXIAo0La80CsZB0A5

-What to expect from the U.N. climate-change negotiations in Montreal. Thus we

get the first-ever MOP, concurrent with the COP, between Nov. 28 and Dec. 9.

-A refresher on the basics of climate conferences and Kyoto

In late November, a mess of world leaders will be gathering in Montreal to

discuss climate change. The conference is a rendezvous -- we must use French

words when speaking of Quebec -- of COP 11 and MOP 1. And it has to do with the

Kyoto Protocol! Isn't that mysterious and intriguing?

Save Wild Parrots in Connecticut(PETITION & more)

(From Suzanne K, http://www.care2.com/c2c/people/profile.html?pid=224838649 )

If you care about free-range parrots in the USA, and the idea that they're now

being killed en masse in Connecticut makes you heartsick, you can do something

about it. (Article: http://www.connpost.com/news/ci_3230543 ) Already, the media

is starting to respond. This is only happening because people like you care and

are willing to take action.

1. The first thing to do is sign our online petition. It only takes a minute to

fill out. Now, take a look at the list of people below. Then, pick up the phone.

Take a deep breath. Be friendly, be civil, be peaceful, be polite, but be firm.

Tell these people you don't want wild parrots killed in Connecticut.

http://new.petitiononline.com/CTMonks/petition.html

So let them know that you don't like what they're doing, you're going to

communicate your concern to anyone who will listen, including the press, elected

leaders, humane groups, and religious organizations. Suggest to them the

obvious: that there are humane alternatives that they haven't looked at. Please

call them now!

2. Al Carbone is the guy who's the PR rep for United Illuminating, the company

that started this whole mad eradication campaign. You can reach Al at (203)

671-4421. Also, please call Al's boss, Nathaniel Woodson, at (203) 926-4637; his

email is: nathaniel.woodson

3. Corey Slavitt is the gal at USDA who claims, for reasons that I can't fathom,

that these killings are somehow " humane. " USDA, not UI, is the entity actually

gassing the parrots. You can reach Corey at (301) 734-8563. Also let Monty

Chandler, of the USDA, know how you feel at (413) 253-2403. His e-mail is

Monte.D.Chandler; fax # is (413) 253-7577. You can also send feedback

to the central office of the USDA using this form -

http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/!ut/p/_s.7_0_A/7_0_1OB?navid=FEEDBACK_FORM & parent\

nav=CONTACT_US & navtype=RT . Tell them that they should get out of the

parrot-killing business, and focus on keeping our food supply safe.

4. Dennis Schain is the guy in the Connecticut DEPA who calls the monk parakeets

" invasive, " which means, I guess, that it's OK to kill them. You can reach

Dennis at (860) 424-4117. Also, call the EPA's Dale May. Dale's at (860)

424-3011; Dale's email is: dale.may; fax # is (860) 424-4078.

5. Now, onto the Connecticut Audubon Society. Milan Bull is it's head. Milan's

not a bad guy: in fact, he's against the killings, likes the wild parrots, and

doesn't think they deserve this cruelty. But I think he made a big mistake when

he allowed the CT Audubon Society to in any way endorse this massacre. You can

reach Milan at (203) 259-6305, ext 113 or via e-mail at: mbull.

The fax number is (203) 254-7673.

Remember, folks: be civil. You have truth, justice, and kindness on your side.

Please make your point without being nasty -- it doesn't help.

For those of you in Connecticut, e-mail your legislator. Use this page to find

your local rep. - http://www.cga.ct.gov/maps/Townlist.asp . Tell them you're

appalled by this cruelty, and that you're going to remember what they do come

election time. Again, be civil.

Tell Secretary Johanns to enforce the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act

Each year, more than nine billion chickens, turkeys, and other birds are

slaughtered without the protection of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act,

simply because the U.S. Department of Agriculture doesn't recognize these

animals as " livestock. "
