John Pilger | The Next War - Crossing the Rubicon

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021006A.shtml

Has Tony Blair, the minuscule Caesar, finally crossed his Rubicon?

Having subverted the laws of the civilized world and brought carnage

to a defenseless people and bloodshed to his own, having lied and lied

and used the death of a hundredth British soldier in Iraq to indulge

his profane self-pity, is he about to collude in one more crime before

he goes, wonders John Pilger.

Abramoff Told Reporter of Nearly a Dozen Contacts with Bush

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021006B.shtml

President Bush met lobbyist Jack Abramoff almost a dozen times over

the past five years and invited him to Crawford, Texas, in the summer

of 2003, according to an e-mail Abramoff wrote to a reporter last month.

US Trade Deficit Hits All-Time High

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021006C.shtml

The US trade deficit soared to an all-time high of $725.8 billion in

2005, pushed upward by record imports of oil, food, cars and other

consumer goods. The deficit with China hit an all-time high, as did

America's deficits with Japan, Europe, OPEC, Canada, Mexico and South

and Central America.

Conservative Official Resigns Public Television Post

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021006D.shtml

The top television executive at the Corporation for Public

Broadcasting announced on Thursday that he would be stepping down.

This is the latest in a string of departures of officials and

consultants who played central roles in an effort by conservatives to

bring what they viewed as more balance to public television and radio.

E.J. Dionne Jr. | Changing Winds on Surveillance

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021006E.shtml

This week the Bush administration was finally forced out of its own

pre-September 11 worldview - and, yes, you read that right. It

happened because some brave Republicans stared the president down and

said: " Stop. " It was a small crack in the wall, and Specter and his

allies will have to remain vigilant. Still, until this week, the White

House had flatly refused to offer such briefings. The winds are

changing, writes E.J. Dionne Jr.

'New Populists' vs. the West

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021006F.shtml

With linchpins in Tehran on one end and Caracas on the other, a new

brand of international populism is rising by fanning the flames of

division between Western powers and the " powerless " of the developing

world. Leaders, from Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez, are winning points at home by

striking a nationalist and anti-American pose.

Army Effort to Enlist Hispanics Draws Recruits, and Criticism

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021006G.shtml

As Sgt. First Class Gavino Barron, dressed in a crisp Army uniform,

trawls the Wal-Mart here for recruits, past stacks of pillows and

towers of detergent, he is zeroing-in on one of the Army's " special

missions " : to increase the number of Hispanic enlisted soldiers. Not

all Latinos, though, are in step with the military's recruitment

goals. In some cities with large Hispanic populations, the focus on

recruitment has polarized Latinos, prompting some to organize against

recruiters and to help immigrants learn their rights.

Herve Kempf | New Suspicions about GMO

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021006H.shtml

The growing body of independent research covering genetically modified

food suggests - at the very least - that its harmlessness is far from

proven, Herve Kempf argues.
