Where does Bottled Water come from? Take Action!

Dear Supporter,

Protect your right to know where bottled water really comes from. Take

Action Now!

Call 202-224-3121 before March 2 to tell your Representative that you

oppose the National Uniformity in Labeling Act. Then email

water to let us know you took action.

Bottled water is classified as a food and regulated by the FDA.

Approximately 25% of bottled water sold in the U.S. is merely tap

water. Rules allow manufacturers to call their product " spring water "

even if it has been chemically treated. In one case in a Natural

Resources Defense Council test, water from an industrial parking lot

next to a hazardous waste site was marketed as " spring water " from a

pristine source.

We need to preserve the right to have stronger labeling rules locally

and in our states to prevent the misuse of current labeling rules.

Right now, there is an effort underway in Congress to pre-empt state

laws on food and bottled water labeling, which would mean that some

good state laws would disappear. For instance, the National Uniformity

in Labeling Act, or HR 4167, would jeopardize California's law

requiring that consumers be notified of contaminants that are known to

the state to cause cancer or birth defects (Proposition 65) as well as

California's statute requiring warnings on shellfish. This bill

threatens food and water safety laws and regulations in more than 30

other states, as well as many local laws. For this reason, numerous

state officials, including the National Association of State

Departments of Agriculture, oppose the bill.

Let your Representative know before March 2nd that you oppose HR 4167,

and that you want the hard-won state and local food labeling laws to

stay put! Call 202-224-3121 to let your Representative hear your

opposition to the National Uniformity in Labeling Act!

Thanks for your important work!

Your Water for All Team

Maj, Sara, Victoria and Wenonah

P.S. Don't forget to email water to let us know you took

action! Thanks!
