Guest guest
I wish to agree and I myself take ascorbic acid in high dose when needed and stay on low dose all the time. But my worry started since I read that vitamin C depletes calcium from our body. Please Listees allay my fear. Thanks. Guest guest
Hi Ratan, I use mineral ascorbates (C-salts) which contain a mix of Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, and Potassium Ascorbates. (http://www.nutri.com/wn/cslt.html) I know nothing about dangers of Ascorbic Acid depleting Calcium, but I have a problem with oxalate build-up and the mineral ascorbates helps my body flush excess oxalates. When healthy, I take 20-30 grams a day. When I had a serious flue a few months ago, my C intake went up to ovedr 100 grams a day. With ascorbic acid my tummy rebels if I take more than about 50 grams a day. With C-salts I had no gut complaints at much higher levels. Guest guest
Vitamin C is indeed mineral depleting, therefore, as with all vitamins and minerals, balance is important. You cannot take huge doses of one vitamin or mineral and hope not to unbalance other needed substances. Luckily it is possible to associate high doses of vitamin C with minerals, most important are magnesium, potassium and calcium, but also sodium is needed for proper balance. You also would not take huge doses of a B vitamin without taking a complex to supply the others. I would even go so far as to say that the only possible trouble with vitamins and minerals is the imbalance between them - high one and low the other.
