Guest guest
I am new to the group and have looked for info regarding this issue but am having trouble finding much. I have a 7 year old daughter with Type 1 diabetes, diagnosed almost 2 years ago. She has been showing signs of an enlarged thyroid for the past 6 months to a year, and was tested a couple of months ago and is now producing antibodies against the thyroid. Her doctor is not too concerned about this as approximately 25% of Type 1 diabetics also develop some other type of autoimmune disease, so for them it's par for the course. I am also new to alternative medicine in the past few months and have been reading a lot. I have come across a lot of information regarding soybean oil affecting the thyroid and as a result am making every effort possible to make sure that my daughter is not eating anything with soybean oil in it. Of course that is proving to make a difference in what she eats. Fortunately she is compliant with making the changes as she understands that her health is so important. We started checking all foods that she eats for soybean oil. I was shocked to find out that the yogurt she likes has soybean oil added to it. We were able to find organic yogurt in the same type of kid containers and switched to that for an occasional treat. Her doctors have been allowing her to have anything sugar free, in fact they hand out samples of sugar free items to the kids. We have now taken her off of anything sugar free also. We recently started buying honey produced in our area for her to use occasionally. We have pretty much eliminated processed foods from her diet as almost everything has soybean oil in it. We are now making our own mayo for salad dressing (she eats lots of veggies with some dressing to dip them in). We are also now starting to juice items for her to drink instead of anything processed. She does drink a lot of water compared to most kids. I am convinced that her diet could be causing the thyroid problem and will continue on this course. I am trying to find a ND in our area that treats children, my chiropractor is assisting me in that search, but that is difficult even in our area (just outside of Houston). Her diabetes is under control well, in fact her insulin needs are about half of what an average diabetic uses, but I think that is absolutely due to her diet. We have pretty much had her on a high fiber and good carbs diet as much as possible. The endocrinologist's dietician and I have been at odds ever since she was diagnosed as they pretty much push any kind of junk the kids want, they let them have. Their motto is a carb is a carb, and has the same effect on the blood sugar, no matter what kind it is. I totally disagree with that. I would sincerely appreciate any info or direction you could point me to in finding out more diet info for type 1 diabetes and thyroid issues resulting from soybean oil consumption.
