Then, the physical and chemical characteristics of the yeast were examined by fractionation procedures and autoradiography. Experiment and Findings: 1. Post 15 hour incubation, nearly all the mercury present was in the yeast cells, with almost none left in growth medium. 2. The major fraction of mercury was bound into the yeast cell walls. Only a small proportion of mercury appeared to be in weakly bound, ion exchange positions. 3. Yeast cell walls are capable of binding approximately their own weight of mercury. Studies show that chelation of pathogen-bound toxic heavy metals is nearly impossible without destroying the pathogens first.
