Anemia helped by Ensure?

Hi-

My elderly father (generally NOT alternative health minded) has had chronic

anemia for several years that didn't budge from scrip iron supplements. So, he's

been getting some drug via injections at an oncologist every 2 weeks....don't

know the name of the drug but it's geared towards enhancing blood-production.

In the past couple months, he started drinking Ensure to balance out his

nutrition and give him more strength (not what I would recommend of course

but...) Anyway, his doctor is blown away that uncharacterstically, he did not

need his injection twice in a row and his hemoglobin and energy are holding fine

for a month now.

The Ensure is the only new thing. So does anyone know which ingredients in

Ensure could've produced this change? I'm hoping if I can show him which

nutrients are the likely precursors, that he'll consider a more natural diet and

natural supplement approach.

Here is the the list of ingredients (below) Wow..what's with all that sugar?...

Thanks and be well!

JS

ENSURE: Water, sugar (sucrose), corn syrup, maltodextrin (corn), calcium

caseinate, high-oleic safflower oil, canola oil, soy protein isolate, whey

protein concentrate, corn oil, calcium phosphate tribasic, potassium citrate,

magnesium phosphate dibasic, natural and artificial flavor, soy lecithin, sodium

citrate, magnesium chloride, salt (sodium chloride), carrageenan, choline

chloride, potassium chloride, ascorbic acid, ferrous sulfate, alpha-tocopheryl

acetate, zinc sulfate, niacinamide, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate,

cupric sulfate, vitamin A palmitate, thiamine chloride hydrochloride, pyridoxine

hydrochloride, riboflavin, folic acid, chromium chloride, biotin, sodium

molybdate, sodium selenate, potassium iodide, phylloquinone, vitamin D3 and

cyanocobalamin.

Ferrous sulfate is iron. I don't know if it is the best form, but ferrous forms

are supposed to be better than ferric forms. Taking vitamin C with iron helps

its absorption.

Besides the sugar, there are a lot of omega 6 oils in that formula. He will need

a lot of omega 3s (fish oil) to balance them.
