Guest guest
Hi Candace, hehehe, I totally understand you girl. My son is like that, but he's got Down's Syndrome so is late to start off with anyhow. He's nearing 7, and still is not potty trained. He knows how to go to the toilet, but for a long time just wouldn't. I tried just putting undies on him as advised by some other people, to let him feel the discomfort, but it had NO effect whatsoever. For 2 days he just wee'd where he was standing even though the potty was right next to him. I finally put him pull-ups back on. I have no idea what the problem is, but find when I push him, he just backs off even more. So I've just left him to it, and let HIM decide when he's ready. Very very slowly he's now using the toilet more - at least once a day now. Last week he woke me up at 5am, and told me he needed to go to the toilet!!!! That was a HUGE win!!! He's not done it since, but it shows he's developing in that direction more and more! The only thing I can advise is to have LOTS of patience!!! Don't force anything, it WILL happen when he's ready! Don't worry about other kids, or the *normal* age, or any of that stuff. Brock is a unique individual and will develop at HIS own rate. Best of luck. love Lisa - Candace Podratz herbal remedies Wednesday, December 22, 2004 3:18 AM Re: Herbal Remedies - OT Potty Training Okay, I had this in with my saved emails for the longest time. Now that Brock is almost 2 1/2 I'm getting *serious* about training him. I bought him big boy undies and he threw them on the floor and ran out of the room. I've put him on the toilet and he sits and complains and complains and WILL NOT go. Finally I give up. I've put in his "it's potty time" video and he gets upset. Anyone ever have their kids seem to be ANTI-POTTY TRAINING? Candace - Janet herbal remedies Wednesday, June 23, 2004 9:52 AM Re: Herbal Remedies - OT Potty Training I potty trained my three children when they were 2-1/2 yrs old. With my first, I read the book "How to Potty Train in One Day", and it worked like a charm. The secret was to have a doll that wets its pants and the child puts the doll on the potty, so he can see. But to keep the charm going, I would have my son sit on the big toilet backwards so he could see himself "making bubbles in the water" while he peed. And it progresses from there. . . With my two girls, we did the doll baby thing; and they were PT in one week. Of course, the backwards deal on the toilet doesn't work for girls. :-) JanetFederal Law requires that we warn you of the following: 1. Natural methods can sometimes backfire. 2. Guest guest
I understand where you are coming from. My girlfriend's son wouldn't potty train at all. The dr said he would do it in his own time, I told her it was crazy. I suggested that Daddy show him how to stand up and try to make it fun. She believed the dr and he was wearing diapers at age 4. Maybe you could limit the amount of fluids and time the potty chair visits. Just a suggestion, it has been a long time since I have had to potty train anyone. Guest guest
I can readily agree with how you're handling it. I was living with my girlfriend for a short time while she was potty training her grand daughter. Sage is extremely bright, but seemed to be a little resistant to potty training. We let her potty train her doll <g>, bought her pretty " big girl " panties, etc. and rewarded her every time she made the choice towards potty training. There were periods when she wasn't interested at all - she'd go back and forth. When she wanted to wear her big girl panties we told her that she'd need to use the toilet and she asked her if that was okay (she got confirmation, but let her decide), etc. and finally she was potty trained. Patience definitely - because if you make them cry over it or feel guilty or compare them to other children, it causes more damage and more resistance to other new experiences. There's no rush anyway. herbal remedies , " Lisa de Haas " <lisa@l...> wrote: > MessageHi Candace, > > hehehe, I totally understand you girl. > > My son is like that, but he's got Down's Syndrome so is late to start off with anyhow. Guest guest
It might help to have another potty trained toddler around every day for him to copy. That's how my son trained himself, watching the baby sitter's 4-year-old. Sometimes they want to be like the 'big' kids. Starris - Candace Podratz .. Guest guest
Hi Candace, I have vivid memories of my brother, at age 5 or 6, coming into the house from playing all afternoon, and walking with his legs very tight together. Then mom saw him, and said "Russ, did you go in your pants again!?" He would get so caught up in playing that he didn't want to take time out to come in and go to the bathroom, so he'd drop his load in his pants! LOL! I know mom wasn't laughing about it much then, but it's hilarious now. Anyway, Candace, I agree with what others have said - don't make him wrong for it. Let it be his choice. You can "influence" his choice in various ways, but use whatever's worked well for other things in the past. My mom claims that each of us kids was potty trained (with the exception of my brother's occassional mishap) with Oreo cookies - 2 for me, 5 for each of my brothers! LOL! If he likes going to the movies, offer him one if he goes 2 whole days on the toilet. Or whatever works for him. Someone else also mentioned not comparing him to other kids (also making him wrong for not potty training), but you can give him opportunities to make the comparison himself. If there are other boys he knows that are potty trained, hanging around them would be good. He'll notice that he's different and he can then choose to "be like the big boys". And then, of course, treat yourself! Don't stress out about it too much. They grow up way to fast - my daughter's 10 yrs old now!! You will be able to look back at this time and laugh. Think of the great stories you'll have for his girlfriends!! LOL!! Guest guest
Now that I finally dropped it, I came in the living room the other night to see him sitting down looking at his potty book. Every time he's turn the page he'd say "potty". When I hopped in the tub I heard him pop his potty video in. So apparently he can look at these things on his own, but if I want him to it's out of the question! KIDS! Guest guest
Well, that's very good Candace!!! This behavior you're describing is something I'm expecting to get from my daughter over the next few years - as she goes from 10 yrs old into the full blown teens!! Sounds like your little man is WAY ahead of the curve! LOL!! I guess it's better to learn this lesson now rather than later! All the best to you and your son, Candace! Merry Christmas!
