I have a question about the recipe below. Does it mean to store the ingredients for two weeks, BEFORE adding the DMSO? And what does it mean to "press the tincture"?

Thanks for your help,

Janet

Yes you add DMSO after you press the oil. That means take fine gauze and filtrate oil, and press hard to get as much oil as you can from the herbs. Or you can use some kind of press to do this, like potato press.

Janet...I do believe that you store the mixture for 2 weeks, then

press(which means strain) out the plant material. Then add the DMSO.

32 oz. of wintergreen oil? Surely this is infused oil and not straight

essential? And forgive my ignorance but what is DMSO? Just wondering as this

sounds like a great recipe . . .

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a by-product of the wood industry, has been in use as a commercial solvent since 1953. It is also one of the most studied but least understood pharmaceutical agents of our time--at least in the United States.

The first quality is its ability to pass through membranes, an ability that has been verified by numerous subsequent researchers.

DMSO reduces inflammation by several mechanisms. It is an antioxidant, a scavenger of the free radicals that gather at the site of injury

DMSO was the first nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory discovered since aspirin. Mr. Bristol believes that it was that discovery that spurred pharmaceutical companies on to the development on other varieties of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories. "Pharmaceutical companies were saying that if DMSO can do this, so can other compounds," says Mr. Bristol. "The shame is that DMSO is less toxic and has less int he way of side effects than any of them."

It was inevitable that DMSO, with its pain-relieving, collagen-softening, and anti-inflammatory characteristics, would be employed against arthritis, and its use has been linked to arthritis as much as to any condition. Yet the FDA has never given approval for this indication and has, in fact, turned down three Investigational New Drug (IND) applications to conduct extensive clinical trials. DMSO is a solvent that is used to carry chemicals thru the skin. I've only used it with ibuprofen for my plantar fascitis and had limited results. Others I know swear by it.

From www.dmso.com (I'm not promoting the site, just came up when I did a search):

DMSO has been used for over 100 years in the United States. It is a natural substance derived from wood pulp and is harmless when used with the proper precautions. It is sold as a solvent. DMSO is an amazing substance that has many uses throughout the world.

I always thought it was a preservative. I remember using it in labs in college for something.

Thanks so much for the info DMSO. Does anyone have a good supplier for that?

And back to one of my original questions. This recipe calls for 32 oz. of

wintergreen oil. Surely that is an infustion? Not the essential oil? Thanks

for any clarifications!

I always order DMSO from Doc. And Wintergreen oil I buy from mountainroseherbs.com.

I think it is essential oil, but I will check label on my bottle and write you later.

I found DMSO at my local co-op health food store. If you're not far from Columbus, I got mine at Beechwold Natural Foods.

I have no idea about the wintergreen.
