Guest guest
About 5 weeks ago I sliced my finger on the knuckle while cutting raw chicken. There was a lot of blood (well, for what would appear to be a small, shallow cut -- after all, there isn't far to go before bone), and even though poured cayenne powder on it right away (it was RIGHT next to where I cut myself!), it took some time to get the bleeding to stop. I held the area with pressure using a paper towel over the cayenne until my husband came home an hour or so later, and he helped me clean it up and bandage it. We put rubbing alcohol on it. The pain when he did that was a 10 on my 1-10 pain scale; comparable to when the novacaine wore off during a root canal once. It took about a week to close up, but seemed to be mending well... although it stayed sore for a couple weeks. Now it has looked the same for the last 3 weeks. The area is still red, there is a raised bump, and every time I bump the area it feels like I'm cutting myself all over again. Any suggestions? What can I do now that the wound is closed? My husband speculated it might be infected -- how would I tell? It doesn't hurt most of the time, nor does it hurt much if I rub the area; it hurts when I knock my hand against something, or something scrapes over it. Guest guest
Dear Tyrie, My sympathies. You are quite lucky you do not have more symtoms. If you were systemically effected throughout your body by an infection, you would perhaps have a fever and body aches etc...Nevertheless, cutting chicken is a great way to give yourself tons of bacteria you do not want in your system. You proberbly need to be on antiboitics, but if that is not of any interest to you, I would suggest something to help build your immune system. You can email me for suggestions. Guest guest
I would think that there is indeed an infection but that it is very deep in the bone. Total Tonic taken orally as a preventative measure will help battle infection but you are also going to want something to put directly on the injury site. Deep tissue repair oil would aid in getting blood to the area and garlic directly on the site would probably penetrate enough to get down to the bone. Guest guest
How about soaking the knuckle in colloidal silver? I know that's not herbal, but it *should* help. Guest guest
I would say, take Echinacea for immune system and mega dose of Total Tonic for possible infection. I agree that deep tissue repair oil will help a lot. If you have fresh yarrow leaves you can make poultice, it is great for wounds. Guest guest
My vote is for plantain. Go pick some from your yard and make a poultice around your finger and wrap it up with gauze. Replace the next morning (the poultice, not the finger). That stuff is made for things like that. If you want to quicken it up soak the finger in hot water for a while before doing the poultice. I've had and heard many infected wound stories (especially fingers) that were almost miraculously cured by plantain.
Guest guest
Hi Tyrie, Try the Total Healing Poultice Powder (recipe in the files). Also, make sure you're taking Echinacea to boost your immune system. Kelli | | Tyrie Woodford [tyrie_woodford] | Monday, August 30, 2004 8:49 AM | herbal remedies | Herbal Remedies - Infected finger? Guest guest
I don't see why not, it also has good penetrating qualities. Guest guest
Thank-you for your suggestions! You've given me a number of ideas. And most of the things you suggested I have on hand. I didn't think to mention that I am pregnant. Would that affect any of the recommendations? I'll wait a day or two, and unless I hear that a suggestion would NOT be OK for being pregnant, I'll start trying things. Here are the suggestions I saw: -- Rub deep tissue repair oil on the finger -- Tape garlic to my finger -- Take lots of Total Tonic orally -- Find some plantain and make a poultice, change twice a day -- Make some healing poultice powder and use that Tyrie
